Species: synth (fallout)
A race of manufactured beings from the Fallout franchise. They started appearing 3 and became a story focus in 4. They're categorized by generations in the game. They come in many shapes and sizes as well as other species. Their most common portrayal in the game is that of the humanoid variant. They're specifically designed to blend in with society and infiltrate them for the benefit of the Institute; The faction that created them.
Generations
Gen 1 Synths
Skeletal robots that resemble a naked endoskeleton. They're initially used as testbeds for biomimetics studies. The lessons learned from designing these robots are used for future generation of synths. In the current time period in the game they're primarily used as cheap labor and expendable troops.
Gen 2 Synths

A robot with a rubbery exterior that mimics an organics' appearance. They're good at infiltration at a certain distance and visibility but are otherwise unmistakably fake when seen up close.
Gen 3 Synths

Artificial lifeforms manufactured in a production line as opposed to natural birth. They're practically indistinguishable, inside and out, from a regular organic apart from some additional cybernetic implants (such as the synth component that you can loot from their bodies when killed), making them excellent infiltration units though at the cost of increased likelihood of going rogue due to their increased intellectual capacity.
