Similar, to the likes of Patreon and SubscribeStar, OnlyFans allows content creators to place their content and videos behind a subscription based paywall. Content on the platform is user-generated and monetized via monthly subscriptions, tips, and/or pay-per-view. The website grew massively in terms of popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, receiving a 75% growth in its user base during this time period.; as of May 2023, OnlyFans had more than three million registered creators and 220 million registered users.

Despite originally being intended as a SFW platform for all forms of content creation, OnlyFans gained a reputation for attracting content creators in the form of models, strippers, sex workers, and amateur pornography creation. As of 2024, 98% of all content on OnlyFans is considered adult content.
