1. Mera as a young whelp, age 6. After his mother was killed by dragonslayers (his father likely killed fighting gryphons), Mera and his brother were sold to the wet markets, where Mera was rescued (but not his brother) by Lord Nigel Haight and raised as a pet. Here he learned the human tongue.

2. Old whelp, age 42. After saving the Haights during a bandit attack on their manor, Mera is released back into the Wild, where he fights for an existence and is dubbed "The Feral" by the other dragons.

3. Adult stage, age 51. Meratezatgh settles upon Mount Rubinox, and runs afoul of the townsfolk of Stanton. After surviving multiple attempts by humans to capture or kill him, Mera reaches a truce with the help of his friend, the hunter Logan Durham. He then participates in the Great War, where he is badly wounded in his left arm after being impaled with a ballista bolt at the Battle of Mier's Forest.

4. Mature adult stage, age 82. Christened a Dragon Lord by the Jutrstra after freeing her and destroying the scheming and oppressive Other Men of the Tassurian Empire, Mera settles down and helps Logan defend Stanton as the land staggers in the chaotic aftermath of the Great War. He begins pursuing a mate, Kharriana, but that courtship was interrupted by the dragons going to war with the gryphons. Leading his Flight at Compton's Cove, Lord Meratezatgh is ambushed, badly wounded in the abdomen and captured fighting with some old friends. He is exchanged when the Jutrstra strikes a peace to release him. Mera mates with Kharriana and raises 2 children, Rargesteyae and Asaewath.

5. Old, age 139. After 28 happy years with Kharriana raising their children, Mera is shattered when Kharriana is killed fighting the Miscabbard cultists when they attack his home, its location divulged by Logan's son Paul. In fury Mera turns on Stanton and burns it to the ground. Logan manages to save most of the townsfolk by agreeing to help Mera exact his vengeance on the Miscabbards. As part of the plan that followed (and went poorly) Mera loses a digit on his left arm that was bitten off while he was being tortured. He manages to defeat the Miscabbards but is forced to stop when they threaten his children. Twenty-one years later Meratezatgh, along with a captive dragon (and future daughter-in-law) Jagewaoyia, help Rargesteyae and Asaewath destroy the Miscabbards . His children then leave to start their own families, leaving Meratezatgh to brood atop Mount Rubinox over the ruins of Stanton. And that was where Jayna Durham, the daughter of Paul and the granddaughter of Logan, came to try to call forth her grandfather's old comrade.
