Species: beta pokemon (species)
In-development designs for Pokémon, generally obtained either from early ROMs (a la the Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo) or from internal leaks.
Beta Pokémon generally fit into two distinct categories: completely unused monsters, or prototype versions of finalized monsters.
- Unused Pokémon generally have original names that are transliterations of in-game text (e.g. Warabbit and Rinrin).
- Prototype Pokémon may be tagged as their "release" name with an additional prefix (e.g. Beta Octillery, Beta Girafarig).
- Some prototype Pokémon may be identified as closely related to a finalized pokémon, but nevertheless have a different name (compare Fiyoko to Torchic.)
- In the interest of separating beta Pokémon from finalized Pokémon, prototype Pokémon should not be tagged as their finalized form! Fiyoko is not Torchic, Beta Octillery is not Octillery, etc.
Fake designs may occasionally be disseminated along with genuine beta designs when enthusiasts are picking through files for art and data. If a design is proven to be fake, it should instead be tagged as fakemon.
