Leela is a cyclops who was originally introduced in the series as an alien; through much of the show's initial airing she was depicted as the lone member of her species. It is later uncovered she is in fact a mutant human, though the least mutated mutant of all, and not an alien at all. Leela was orphaned by her parents in an attempt to avoid having her live the life of a mutant in the sewers beneath New New York. Leela worked as a Cryogenic Career Assignment Officer before meeting Fry and quitting to join the Planet Express crew as the captain.

Mutants use an Asian-style naming format where the family name comes before the given name (as an example, her parents are named Turanga Morris and Turanga Munda); using a standard naming format, her name is "Leela Turanga."
