A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, lava, or other fluids. Lakes are usually fed by rivers and streams, and are generally deep enough to support aquatic life.
Lakes may be large enough to support activities such as boating, underwater diving, or seaplane operations. During winter, lakes can freeze over in sufficient thickness to allow ice skating.
