Plus, a significant amount of mistagging under the *_coat tags.
The intention of this bur is to redefine a group of tags, so that they are unambiguous and unlikely to cause mistaggings and tag wars.
I have kept some of the tags as they are, because, in this scenario, there are no other word to describe these other than coat. The only exception being leather_coat which could use leather_sweater instead, but I think leather_coat is more elegant and is unambiguous enough as to not be a problem, not like the other tags.
A fleece is a sort of coat. It is warmer than a jacket and as a tag that has seen almost no use before it would be perfect to transfer the posts to. It is much smaller in scope too, a fleece is either a piece of warm clothing (a coat, basically) or thick layers of wool from sheeps, the tag is much less likely to be used to tag the latter given that there are *_wool-related tags already in use which makes fleece redundant for that purpose anyway.
According to the Merriam Webster, a coat is:
1
a: an outer garment worn on the upper body and varying in length and style according to fashion and use
b: something resembling a coat
2: the external growth on an animal
3: a layer of one substance covering another
...and a fleece is:
1
a: the coat of wool covering a wool-bearing animal (such as a sheep)
b: the wool obtained from a sheep at one shearing
2
a: any of various soft or woolly coverings
b: a soft bulky deep-piled knitted or woven fabric used chiefly for clothing
Most traditional coats are made of cotton or wool, so while not completely synonymous, they are extremely similar in meaning, this would be like saying "violet and purple aren't the same color", sure they are not if you wanna be pedantic about it, but that doesn't matter since the differences are near nonexistent. It would be like a day and day, but 1 hour later comparison. I hope that this bur will pass, so all the bickering about winter coats stop and the site has a more effective way to tell animal pelts from warm clothing apart to avoid mistagging, tag wars and arguments like the linked topic.
If everything goes right, I will make a followup bur to aloas the *_coat-related tags to coat_(disambiguation). Will also do implicate tailcoat -> fleece.
PS: Some of these posts under those tags must manually be updated to *_pelt or *_fleece before approving this bur.
