MemberWill somebody ever tell me, why does My Little Pony became so popular these days? Am I missed something? Or just getting old...
Greetings from East-Europe.
FacelessKitsune
Memberits a mixture of a lot of things coming together at once such as the writing staff (Lauren Faust) its more unique art style, its deviation from its own norm (previous pony series and other 'girls' shows)
as for the age category it hit i believe we can attribute that directly to Faust and the writing staff since the show feels a lot more like the cartoons we grew up with in the mid 90s then modern cartoons
to top it off cartoons aren't really the big thing on TV for the last decade so having at least one good cartoon to watch is nice (and imho there's not much else to watch atm)

It's ok to not like things,
But don't be a dick about the things you don't like.
If people don't like MLP, fine. Nothing says they have to. There's nothing wrong with being disinterested or mildly annoyed with something that's popular. But the anger, resentment and rejection towards the show by some is pathetic. MLP FiM is so innocuous that it's almost a perfect litmus test for immaturity, entitlement and mal-adjustment. If someone hates, not just dislikes but HAETS the show with passionate rage, there's something wrong with them. It's like watching someone kick a dog or lay into a waiter. Not a good person.

MemberSince this seems to have devolved into bitching about bitching about ponies and the question got only a vague sort of half answer—
Do you remember the old My Little Pony from the 80s? Forget everything you remember. Those cartoons were garbage; this really is a horse of a different color.
@XSweeney Friendship is Magic was blessed with a feminist producer and director who made it her mission to challenge people's expectations of what a show "for girls" is really all about, and I think she has succeeded. The characters are colorful and cute, but they're also well-written—especially for a cartoon, and doubly so for a children's cartoon. Each of the main characters fits a certain archetype (the nerd, the tomboy, &c.), but they manage to avoid one-dimensional characterisation. Lauren Faust has fought tooth and nail with Hasbro to keep the show from becoming just an extended advert for the toys like the old series.
There are numerous references to pop culture and classic animation (including homages to Benny Hill < http://youtu.be/m8iWgoOxaYU > Pepe le Pew < http://youtu.be/L142_juksw8 > and Stephen Sondheim < http://youtu.be/fSbXGsysAAk >). The show is meant to be entertaining not just to kids, but to parents and really anyone else who might care to watch it. There are jokes and references that kids might not get. The writers are definitely aware of the "brony" demographic and have made nods to them.
I think, to get a feel for what Faust has been fighting for, I'd recommend reading her rebuttal of "My Little Homophobic, Racist, Smart-Shaming Pony" < http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2010/12/24/my-little-non-homophobic-non-racist-non-smart-shaming-pony-a-rebuttal/ >.
Haha, I've written an essay on e621. Don't worry, I'll be sharing it somewhere it'll get read, too. C:

MemberIt is really difficult to explain, and I don't know how well it would translate into another language. There is really nothing else like it. They created a world that the characters live in that is simplistic yet immersive.
The humor functions on several different levels. You get the cartoony physical comedy like Twilight getting an anvil dropped on her or Applejack falling on her face repeatedly from a platform, but more often the jokes come out of nowhere and are completely unexpected. Sometimes you aren't even sure they were there, but you find yourself laughing at them anyway. On rare occasions, you even get references to the fans themselves like the nod to the gore fic "Cupcakes" in Party of One or the Chocolate Rain in the latest episode.
And yet it never actually departs from being the cartoon for little girls that it is. At all times, it remains sugary sweet and girly as hell. Where shows like Spongebob or The Powerpuff Girls makes it's jokes for the parents more obvious, Ponies plays them like whispers through the proverbial fourth wall--an in-joke between the writers and the audience.
Seriously, the writing is way better than a kids' show deserves.

and really guys, before you hate it, have the balls to try it. this FIM stuff has as much to do with the old mlp as CERN with a teapot. no really, if you'd have told me a yea ago that i would like ponies, i probably would'ce had slapped you. but it's pretty awesome. MemberI don't know who was growing up with MLP because i grew up With Dragonball and Dragonballz, scoobydoo n such. If there was an MLP in the 80's cool i didn't know that but really I don't hate the show but personally it drives me nuts when people are throwing ponies onto a Pink Floyd album or drawing them as soldiers. I'm not trying to sound like an ass but i find it disrespectfull, and yes i realize there are floyd/mlp fans but common. Oh and if anyone could tell me how to get the blacklst to work i'd appreciate it because mine dosn't seem to work.

Seriously. What are you? A pony? An idiot?
Grow the fuck up and ignore shit like this. We can't judge what people like, but we can judge content. But we can't judge content with mixing what people like.
Regardless, you can ignore or bash my TL;DR comment. :|

MemberDoes no one else see the humor inherent in this little comic strip? I like MLP. Not to the point of calling myself a brony, but I like the show. And this made me chuckle. For god's sake, all of you bronies flipping out about this sound JUST LIKE the furries flipping out over that CSI episode. Big deal. Why is it worth raising your blood pressure. Chill. Move along. Find something you enjoy to fap to.

MemberLet me see if I can explain this short and sweet...
The writing and design (at least for the first season) was done by Lauren Faust, who also wrote/designed the Power Puff Girls, Fosters Home for Immaginary Friends, and Dexter's Laboratory. All of the shows she's done are known for having great animation and writing. A lot of care and detail was put into even the smallest things, to the point where the background sounds include faint birds chirping, and individual frames are looked at and edited to keep the animation as fluid. The voice acting is pretty good, too.
The characters have, well, more character. They have very distinct personalities, strengths and flaws, and can be pretty funny (though as Bizzle said, what's considered funny is usually subjective). The plots are usually interesting, and most episodes do a pretty good job of having an actual message without cheaply slapping one at the end. Some even have the characters challenge their own morals (see episode "The Ticket Master")
Characters that only appear once sometimes are as developed as the main cast. For instance, they put a significant amount of history into the main enemy for the season 2 pilot, Discord, who is not only essentially Q from StarTrek TGN, but is voiced by the same guy, John de Lancie.
And, of course, there's the fandom. Of course, there are people who are simply trolling or "embracing the irony", but they're not the majority. EquestriaDaily.com, a pony-themed news blog, has hit 104,789,000 pageviews as of this writing. There are a number of high quality stories, from cross-overs, to dark what-if stories, to the enevitable shipping. A number of musicians have made some pretty high quality song (The Wooden Toaster, Mic the Microphone, The Living Tombstone, Jackle App), and a number of parodies have been made (for example, http://e621.net/post/show/156384).
So yea. Sorry if I rambled on for too long, hope I got all the important bits, yadda yadda yadda, and Have a nice day.
MakoSushi
MemberSurprisingly enough the show is NOT that bad. I mean, it could be worse. I saw the show once when I saw the first ships on it on here. I don't remember how, but after watching the first episode or two I started to like it. Maybe more so the rule 34s than the show. But if anyone hasn't heard the writers of the show have now geared the show as far internetly as possible without the worry of having people complain. One of the better examples of this is I believe the 14th episode of season 2, where she includes the fan name Derpy that had before started a bunch of interest in bronies. As far as the term brony goes, to some extent if anything about the show makes you happy, you are a brony, or in my case a pegusister. Do I promote being a brony? No. Do I demote it? No. Do I insult bronies or haters? NO. But, do I like the show? Yes. Whelp, that's it from the peanut gallery. You stay classy San Diego.
