Serafuku (literally translating to "sailor outfit") is a type of school uniform commonly worn by Japanese girls in middle and high school. Outside of Japan, the uniform is often popularly associated with the anime character Sailor Moon, and more broadly, with anime in general.
The "classic" serafuku consists of a white blouse, a sailor-style collar, a red neckerchief, and a pleated skirt - which is often blue or black. However, there are many variations on the uniform, some officially used in real life, and others purely worn as cosplay or drawn with artistic license. Serafuku may vary in colour, length of the shirt and skirt, swap the neckerchief for a ribbon, bow, bolo tie or necktie, and may feature a cardigan or pull-over sweater worn over the blouse.
Important Note: Serafuku should not be confused with Sailor Uniform - which describes the style of naval uniform the serafuku is patterned after.
Serafuku are variously also referred to as "Sailor-Fuku", "seifuku", "sailor uniform", or "Japanese schoolgirl outfit" - while "seifuku" is sometimes used to refer to the serafuku, seifuku simply means school uniform, and can apply to any Japanese school uniform.
