Zune is a discontinued brand of digital media players and services marketed by Microsoft that lasted primarily from 2006 to 2011. It was infamous for being released late into the legacy of rival Apple's iconic and ubiquitous iPod, with its first device (later known as the Zune 30; "30" is its hard disk space in gigabytes) mocked for its considerably bulky design with brown as an available color option. The later second-generation models (the flash storage-based 4, 8, and 16 and the hard drive-based 80 and 120) and especially the third-generation touchscreen-enabled Zune HD garnered more positive reception, but the devices never got more than a cult following. Microsoft discontinued the devices' production in 2011, as they weren't able to garner a significant market share and smartphones became increasingly popular with their ability to provide music through dedicated apps.

Besides the devices, "Zune" was also the name of their dedicated media player software for Windows PCs, while its digital distribution service was titled the Zune Marketplace (later the separate Xbox Music and Xbox Video services and apps, respectively titled today as Groove Music and Microsoft Movies & TV).
