A bandeau is a strapless, sleeveless garment that covers the wearer's breasts (or pecs), exposing the rest of the upper torso and midriff.
Bandeau are frequently seen as athletic wear and swimwear, but they may also be worn casually, especially under open shirts or jackets. Many "female adventurer" characters in fantasy settings are seen wearing bandeau as well. Some characters popular on e621 frequently depicted wearing bandeau include Krystal from Star Fox, Shantae from the series of the same name, and Sticks from Sonic Boom.
Bandeau may consist of a single loop of fabric that tightly wraps around the chest, it may be cut to define the individual breasts or have a straight cut across, a bandeau can also be tied, zipped, or pinned together at the front or back.
Similar Clothing/Not To Be Confused With:
Bandeau are frequently confused with tube tops and strapless bras, here are some ways to differentiate the three:
Tube Top
- A tube top will almost always cover more skin than a bandeau
- A bandeau only covers a narrow strip around the breasts, even a conservative bandeau should only just cover the character's cleavage, and have a small amount of material below the breasts.
Strapless Bra
- A strapless bra has hard, moulded cups holding the breasts
- Bandeau will never have hard cups for the breasts (although they may sometimes look like they do), they are a piece of fabric.
