This is an informal group for three canid species colloquially called jackals: the black-backed_jackal, the side-striped_jackal of sub-Saharan Africa and the golden_jackal of Eurasia. Of these, only the black-backed jackal and side-striped jackal are closely related, with the golden jackal more related to the wolf, coyote, and ethiopian wolf.

For the sake of convenience, the anubian_jackal is also implicated to this informal group.
