Meta: crossover
A crossover can most broadly be described as when elements from different pieces of established media properties are depicted together.
Most often this is tagged when characters from different pieces of media are depicted together in the same post. Do not tag for multi-images, sketch pages, or other posts where different copyrights appear in separate, unrelated images (e.g. the six fanarts challenge, unless the characters are directly interacting with each other).
Note
Note: For the rest of this article "copyright character" will describe any character from an "established", copyrighted piece of media, such as a video game, film, cartoon, or comic, as opposed to a personally owned original character or fan character
Crossover Types/Subgenres
General Crossovers
- Characters from multiple pieces of media are interacting within a scene
- Copyright characters from one piece of media are inserted into the setting of a different piece of media
Crossover Cosplay
- When a copyright character is dressed in the identifiable costume of a character from a different copyrighted property
- Clothing Swap - applies when the two characters are in the same post, wearing eachother's outfit
Crossover Ship
- Short for "Crossover Relationship"
- When two characters from two separate media properties are shown as a romantic and/or sexual couple
- Crack Ship - a subtype of crossover shipping with intentionally bizarre and humorous character combinations
Style Crossover
- When two characters are drawn in clearly visually distinct art styles from one another, and are interacting within the same space
- Not inherently a crossover of media properties, but usually involves drawing characters from multiple media properties in their on model art styles
Character Fusion
- Merging two distinct characters into a single new combined character, who has attributes and visual features of both separate characters1
- Not inherently a crossover of media properties, but often involves multiple copyright characters being "fused"
- hexafusion - an "art meme" where three characters are combined in a circular diagram, showing a fusion of all three, and two-character fusions between each of the three
Square Crossover
- When distinct versions of the same copyright character are interacting with one another
- Important Note: Square crossovers should not be tagged as crossover, not a crossover between characters of separate media properties
