An extinct felid subfamily containing many species commonly referred to as saber-toothed cats, including the famous Smilodon. Similar to pantherinae and proailurinae, it is not part of the feline subfamily, but its own subfamily under the felidae family.

For the sake of ease and consistency this subfamily will be used to determine what is or isn't a saber-toothed cat. This subfamily contains several genera, listed below.
