Punk is a subculture associated with punk rock originating in the 1970s, or aspects of the subculture such as fashion, ideologies, and visual art. Punks are associated with anarchism and other left-wing ideology, and rebellion from social norms. Punk fashion is derived from multiple older alternative styles such as greasers and glamrock. Clothing is often DIY or thrifted, due to punk's association with anti-consumerism.
Hairstyles are often brightly colored and spiky, with a particularly common style being the mohawk. Clothing often features a plaid pattern or prints related to bands or political iconography. Combat boots and sneakers are the most common types of footwear. Leather jackets are also common, typically decorated with patches and pins.
