Mountain Dew (stylized as Mtn Dew) is a brand of fluorescently colored, highly-caffeinated sodas produced and owned by PepsiCo. First introduced in 1940, the namesake soda is a green, citrus-flavored soda. The term "Mountain Dew" was originally Southern and/or Scots/Irish slang for moonshine (i.e. homemade whiskey). There was only one soda in the lineup until 1988 with the introduction of a diet soda variant called Diet Mountain Dew, along with another soda that was introduced and discontinued that same year called Mountain Dew Red. The brand extension began in earnest in 2001 with the introduction of Mountain Dew Code Red, a cherry-flavored soda, and several more variants were introduced since.
A cliché of the brand is that it is highly "prized" as part of the traditional gamer meal of Mountain Dew and chips (usually Doritos, another PepsiCo brand under Frito-Lay).
