An energy weapon is a weapon, artifact, or device that makes use of some type of energy (such as light, plasma or even magic) as its primary means of inflicting damage.

Also known as directed-energy weapons in real life, these types of energy weapons produce energy projectiles or emit beams of energy instead of solid projectiles.

Types

energy_gun - Energy weapons designed like a handheld firearm for ergonomic convenience.

laser_gun - Guns that fire focused beams of light.
plasma_gun - Guns use plasma as its projectile.

plasma_pistol - A handgun that fires plasma bolts.
plasma_rifle - A larger plasma gun designed after a rifle.

raygun - Consisting of coiled energy projector and a bulbous body, this is an old school energy gun that can fire all sorts of exotic energies at the target that causes a myriad of effects from transformation to disintegration.
blaster - Another old school energy weapon. This one is more gun-like in appearance with an energy projector shaped like a barrel of a gun.
arc_thrower - An energy gun that shoots directed steams or bolts of electricity at a target from long range.
energy_bow - A bow, and its arrows, that are made out of pure energy or magic.

tesla_coil - A metal rod enclosed by a series of rings and topped with a sphere that electricity. Although not a weapon in real life, in fiction these devices have been used as directed energy weapons.
sonic_weapon - Weapons that makes use of strong sound waves to subdue or even harm a target from a distance.

dubstep_gun - A sonic gun with a speaker-like energy emitter that fires weaponized dubstep at a target.

plasma_grenade - A thrown ranged explosive (grenade) that releases plasma explosions instead of conventional ones.
particle_weapon - Energy weapons that fire hyper-accelerated molecular projectiles.

Projectile Types

energy_beam - A continuous stream of projected energy.

energy_blast - An energy beam with a cone-shaped area of effect.
laser_beam - an energy beam made out of focused light.

energy_ball - An orb or sphere of pure energy or magic fired as a projectile.
plasma_ball - A glob of hot plasma fired as a projectile.

Melee Energy Weapons

A weapon that emits energy to be used as a close-quarters combat weapon. They're usually devices designed after a conventional melee weapon and emit energy constructs from an emitter in place of a solid blade or weapon head. Alternatively these are spectral weapons made entirely out of pure energy which are usually created by a magic spell by a magic user.

Types

energy_blade - A device that emits a steady stream of thin length of energy in place of and acts as a cutting blade.

energy_sword - A hilt-like handheld device that emits a long energy blade. Alternatively a long paddle-like device that emits energy from its edges.
energy_axe - A haft or polearm that projects a wide but short steam of energy.
energy_dagger - A small handheld device that emits a short energy blade. Alternatively a short stick-shaped device that emits energy from its edges.
energy_claws - A device that projects a row of energy blades, creating a claw-like effect.

energy_polearm - A quarterstaff-like device that emits energy from its business end.

energy_scythe - A polearm that projects a long forward-facing curved energy blade.
energy_spear - A polearm that projects a concentrated spike of energy from the top of the device.

energy_hammer - An energy weapon that causes crushing or concussive damage despite being made of energy.

Named Energy Weapons

lightsaber - A type of energy sword from the Star Wars franchise.
The Type-1 Energy Weapon, or just "energy sword", from the Halo franchise. A katar-like energy blade.
The Psionic Blade, or just "psi-blade", from the StarCraft . A vambrace with a blade emitter powered by psionic energy.
mega_buster - An arm_cannon used by Mega Man from the franchise of the same name.
