A landline phone, sometimes called a "home phone" is a telephone hardwired to a telephone line for transmission. Landline phones are comprised of two parts, the handset — which has a speaker and receiver (to hear through and speak into, respectively), and the base — which is where the handset rests when not in use.

There are two forms of landline phone...

  • wired or corded phones have a physical cord that tethers the handset to the base of the phone, the base of the phone usually has buttons for dialing numbers
    • rotary phones, which have a rotary disk to dial numbers, instead of a button keypad, are almost always corded phones
  • cordless phones have wireless handsets, which can be used within an area around the base, the handset often has buttons for dialing, rather than the base
