Most Volker synthetics (made by the Volker corporation) consist of a biologically limited artificial intelligence and a synthetic body that has semi-organic internals which require human needs, such as food. Their intelligence resembles that of a human's. They have been assigned a wide variety of roles from civilian to military, most notably as combatants in a popular bloodsport in the restless post-scarcity territory controlled by the Volker Corporation. With no rights for machines, (and with Veka Sendenhorst being the most notable exception) all Volker synthetics are expected to eventually be retired and their parts recycled (which, according to dtstat, resembles butchery thanks to the biomimetic design of their internals).

Other megacorporations and government bodies in the setting have synth designs of their own.

A common synth characteristic across all makes and models is an angular snout resembling anthropomorphic sharks or aeromorphs.
