wheel of fortune (tarot)
One of the Major Arcana defined in tarot. In typical portrayals, the Wheel of Fortune is a giant wheel inscribed with text that alternates between, starting from the top and going clockwise: "TARO" and the tetragrammaton, the name "Yahweh" in four characters. In the inner section of the wheel are alchemical symbols for, starting from the top and going clockwise: mercury, sulfur, water, and salt. The wheel is surrounded by the Egyptian gods Typhon and Anubis and a mythological sphinx, as well as an angel, eagle, winged lion, and winged bull, the latter four representing a number of zodiac signs.
In cartomancy, the upright Wheel of Fortune arcanum is interpreted as good luck, karma, life cycles, destiny, and turning points.
The reversed Wheel of Fortune arcanum is interpreted as bad luck, resistance to change, and breaking cycles.
