human shield
The act of using a sentient living being to deter an attack. This form of protection foregoes conventional armor in favor of deterrence as going through an attack will most likely harm an innocent, making the assailant hesitant or even not attack at all. Despite its name, the 'shield' doesn't doesn't necessarily have to be a human being nor should they be wielded like a shield by someone. The act itself could either be voluntary (eg.: Someone trying to protect a loved one) or involuntary (eg.: A hostage situation). Also 'human shielding' isn't strictly limited to using a single individual. This act can go beyond that and go for an entire group (eg.: Hiding among a crowd to deter an assailant).
