A trump (atout) is one of a set of 21 cards complementing the suited cards in a tarot deck meant for playing card games rather than divination. With the Fool, they replace the traditional major arcana. Decks such as the Tarot Nouveau are used in card games across Continental Europe. Although reversible like the face cards, the trumps are not symmetrical. Each trump card has two scenes, one urban, the other rural, both following themes unrelated to the traditional tarot major arcana.
