The Target Corporation is an American retail corporation founded in 1902 that operates discount department stores and hypermarkets across the United States. With nearly 2,000 location as of 2024, the company is one of the largest American-owned private employers in the United States, and the seventh-largest retailer in the country.
Target's first real connection with the Furry community is through Bullseye, a bull terrier character that has been the mascot of the company since 1999. However posts on e621 tagged with target_corporation multiplied in July 2024, following a reimagining of Bullseye by Jayrnski as an anthropomorphic spaniel. Beyond dogs, Target is also recognized for the distinct red bollards outside of their store locations; being spherical instead of cylindrical, they are commonly distinguished as the "Target balls".
The company is strictly within the United States, although it did briefly have a subsidiary in Canada from 2011 to 2015. Despite their similar marketing, the Target retail stores in Australia are unaffiliated with the American company, and are in fact owned by Wesfarmers Limited, which also owns the equally confusing Kmart Australia.
