Species: echidna
An echidna is one of four species of monotreme native to Australia and New Guinea. All are insect-eaters with long snouts and possess spines on their backs. As monotremes, they lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.
The short-beaked echidna or spiney anteater (Tachyglossus aculeatus) is among the most wide-spread of mammals in Australia and shares New Guinea with the three long-beaked species.
Echidnas derive their name from Echidna, the Mother of All Monsters, from Greek myth.
Tagging: In practice, the majority of "echidnas" are characters from the sonic (series) fandom and bear little resemblance to the actual animal.
