This tag is used when the post contains an object (usually attached to a pole, wall or held by a character) used to indicate a hazard, show an advertisement, show a character's thoughts, etc.

A sign can contain text, symbols, and visual imagery.

Context is sometimes important when determining whether an object is a sign. A held drawing may only be a drawing, but an object can contain a graphic on it, and be considered a sign if it is trying to convey some message to the viewer or someone else.
