Fritz the Cat is an American comic strip created by Robert Crumb, which originally ran from 1965 to 1972. It was originally published in the Help! and Cavalier magazines, before it went on to be published in magazines associated with the underground comix scene, where compilations of the strip became associated with counterculture of the era.
Set in a "supercity" of anthropomorphic animals, the strip focused on Fritz, a feline con artist who went on wild adventures that sometimes involved incredibly sexual and raunchy acts.
The comic strip was also adapted for a 1972 adult animated black comedy film, written and directed by Ralph Bakshi in his directorial debut. It is also noted for being the first X-rated animated film in cinema history, although Crumb ended the strip following the film due to disagreements with its production. It was followed up by a 1974 sequel entitled The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, which was produced without involvment of both Bakshi and Crumb.
