Topic: The Feedback Thread

So it just occurred to me that we don't have a thread for providing feedback about the site, the moderators, the administrators, or whatever else.

Want to praise somebody? Want to disagree with the way we're running things around here? Want to vent your frustration about me or anyone else on the staff? Do it here! You may very well be bringing up a point that's on many people's minds, and one that we might not be aware of or have been slow to address.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR FEEDBACK DETAILED AND RESPECTFUL. Saying something like "you guys suck because you couldn't properly run a website if your life depended on it" might make you feel better, but that's not going to help us improve at all. Give us specifics.

If you'd rather provide feedback directly to me for fear of making yourself a target here, that's perfectly fine too. Just e-mail me at [email protected]

I never want it to be said that we, or at least I, was not open and RESPONSIVE to feedback.

Alright, so, I'll start this topic off with an issue that has been bothering me for quite a while now.

Fixing, much less IMPROVING, the site has been slow. Really, really slow. I'm well aware of this, and I'm sure many other people are as well. There are still tons of bugs that have remained completely unaddressed ever since the change of ownership in September, almost half a year ago now.

So why aren't we making any real progress in this area?

Truth of the matter is, we need a Ruby On Rails coder. Varka knows a bit about Ruby On Rails, but we need someone that really has experience with it and would be willing to volunteer their time. That's it, really. That's why we've made so little progress. I'd love for that to change, as I'm sure you guys would too. We've got to find somebody, so if you or anyone you know might be interested in helping us out, tell us!
Aurali wuz here.

Responses to this or any of your own praise/complaints are welcome below.

Aurali is doing his/her job right, I'm sure. But s/he's a real ninja about it. Sneaky devil. I doubt I'd see them if they were standing right in front of me.

In other news, my feedback for this post is that so far, I really like how the new team has been administrating the site. Aaaand... well, that's all I have for now, actually.

I find that the "Quote | Vote up | Vote down" buttons don't actually seem to work for me. Is this related to my account type, shitty ISP, or is it some kind of a bug and unrelated to the first two possible reasons?

SINCE WE HAVE NO FEEDBACK HERE I AM GOING TO ASSUME THAT WE ARE AWESOME, THANKS

Updated by anonymous

You guys HAVE been doing an awesome job, though. When we have complaints or gripes, we bring it up in the relevant topic and you guys respond to us within hours, if not minutes, of posting. You've so far proven to always be on the ball whenever something happens, and even when the site goes down accidentally we are confident in and know that you are doing your best to fix whatever the problem is. Unlike Mellis et al you don't slam people for having opinions, instead actively working things out with the community, and you keep everything (for the most part) transparent to us, the users, which really puts the amount of effort you guys put into this with very little benefit rather amazing. Yeah it's been slow, it's been taking time, but you do stuff to give us something better whenever you can, even if it's an inconvenience (see MLP complaints spurring the blacklist fix).

In short, kudos. Thanks for putting up with us. You're doing great, and I hope to keep working with you guys for a long time.

I've never been banned, if that's what you mean. :P I've just been one of the many anons floating around for the past.... jesus, at least four-five years now it feels, maybe more? So I'm very familiar with what's gone on visibly. It wasn't until recently what with everything that you guys have been doing, for good or ill, that I finally decided to make an account proper and start speaking my mind, and actually participating as a member of the community.

Either you're posting more pictures per page or the blacklist thing no longer removes posts from pages andi t's a bigger difference than expected, but I'm seeing a LOT more pics per page and I LOVE it. Thank you so much for much much less unnecessary clicking.

oh, and i didnt know if this was a place i could bring this up...but it is a feedback thread, so...yeah. sorry, if its not the right place.

The amount of comments allowed per hour will be addressed soon. Apparently there was a misunderstanding of what the limit should be.

well, thats kinda my point. my understanding was there be a limit only if a comment comes with a bump. not bumping means no limit, is what my understanding was. unless that's the misunderstanding you were referring to, in which case...good. i liked the option of no limit as long as there was no bump.

I have no idea how long this has been the case, but I just now noticed that, no matter where else you are on the site, the "Forum" tab italicizes when there's a new post! Brilliant! If this has been the case for a while, then I feel like a moron, but it's still good.

I like the new look of the main page with the blacklisted items removed and a full page full of artwork. Looks great!

When is the same treatment going to be done to the comments page? I'd rather see a comment page sans blacklisted posts so that I can post comments on the artwork I only want to see. And not the page after page, after page of blacklisted art comment posts.

It ain't gonna happen Kerrija, the way I was able to increase the posts without major bandwidth increase is not applicable without text. And I ain't putting any blacklist stuff server side.

It will not be going back to the way it was, however the limit is being raised up to 15 comments per hour. Reasonable, but enough that people will be inclined not to spam.

(Unlimited anything is dangerous on a system this fast)

Agreed on the unlimited. As for the comments thing: So there's no chance that blacklisted images can't be culled from the comments page as well? damn.

I have been very happy with the site and it's staff. I appreciate the humor and obvious care taken in managing E6. This site wouldn't even exist if (Varka?) hadn't taken the reins and for that I thank you.

Could be a reference to the Futurama quote which was, I believe, a reference to the BA quote.

The site could use some kind of prompt or popup that appears when an image is posted with the tag "comic" that will let the user know it should be pooled with the rest of the images in the comic and how to do it.

There've been around 5 comics posted in the past few days that are still just sitting there with no pools.

What Riversyde said. But also, not all "comic" images have pools. Many may be one-off images that are in a comic format. Example: post #116030

Because I'm not going to sit on my ass all day fixing other people's shit. Maybe instead of being a cunt about it, you could consider the very simple suggestion I made that would educate noobies to pool their own shit and save the people that do have time to go around fixing shit from having to pool other people's comics.

Or, maybe, YOU could tell these "noobies" to pool their comics. It's all explained in here. http://e621.net/help/pools

It's a legitimate idea. it honestly is, but I don't think we have *any* basis for that kind of functionality. it would have to, probably, be written in from nothing basically. So it's not really as "simple" as it seems.

Part of the idea of a website like this is that users help. It can't ALL be the mods and admins. we can't do all the shit we need to do AND upload/tag EVERYTHING.... :(

So, the idea of you "fixing someone else's shit", especially when combined with a friendly note of "hey,I saw you uploaded a comic--Thanks! I enjoyed it. But I noticed you didn't pool it, so I pooled it for you... but in the future, you should pool your comics. You can see how here: http://e621.net/help/pools " adds a heck of a lot to the over all value of the website.

Most of our users come, browse, and fap. it's the few devoted uploaders, taggers, note makers, wiki editors etc that really make this site tick... :)

That said, the idea of, perhaps.. a note on the upload page of basic user's screen. we can remind them to try include a source, link to a tagging suggestions page, clarify the differnece between questionable, safe and explicit, and remind them to pool if needed.

Why are we suddenly bending over backwards from artist's takedown requests.

All of a sudden, artists are coming out in droves to get their art removed, even after it was here for four fucking months!
If they wanted it off they should have said something then!

Don't turn this into a stupid Fchan. This website is going to shit, (along with the MLP, the RP and the flood of humans!)

Heed my appeal char, just deny them outright, no harm is being done, we are not redistributing their art for sale.

It's called legal matters. If you host someone's art, they request it taken down, and you don't, i'm pretty sure that's against the law. Also, Will tag subscriptions ever be re-enabled?

SUDDENLY? I've been removing artwork for artists that request its removal since the day I started as an admin on e621, 1 YEAR ago now. This is nothing that happened recently.

I promise you that well over half of the artists who request to have their art removed from the site NEVER WOULD HAVE DONE SO had someone simply ASKED them first before uploading their art. That has been the sole reason for many, many takedown requests. Artists just want you to ask.

Um. Sorry if this is the wrong thread. And sorry. Chances are existant I've bothered someone or will with this...

I love how tags can be so amusing with minimal... Oh right! Reading comprehension! Apple Bloom, not Applebloom. Grey Hoof, not Greyhoof. Most pony characters are the only examples of the names used. You probably don't get it. Adding _(mlp) to characters lacking presence outside of My Little Pony is redundant. The very concept insults the users' very intellect. Apparently, we were incapable of realizing it was My Little Pony by the "my_little_pony" tag.

There are also those who gripe about MLP related things like it isn't their own fault for seeing most of it. I never even use a blacklist, yet I avoid unwanted tags rather easily. Try searching for your interests, rather than unthinkingly complaining about something you don't want to see. Add the tag (or 3) you want and add -my_little_pony. I hate whiners, so the ignoring of such simple steps truly irks.

Know what you want, know what you don't, search, and be done with it. There is no need for "_(mlp)" and now you've been given my logic on why. Spike, royal guard, and maybe a few others. They actually need that extra. The vast majority don't. Come on...

The "_(mlp)" defines them as specifically being the MLP characters, in the case of another character wuith the same name appearing, it prevents that from bleeding into the same character and a separation needing to be done -after- the fact. It's just good common sense to distinguish them before it's necessary. And while yes, there are some names that are 'obviously' MLP only, there are cases where weirder names have been applied elsewhere. There's also the fact that it keeps the naming convention consistant across all aspects (Since multiple characters with the same name are denoted as <character>_(<origin>) ).
