Yes, I do often times flood the front page, I "Try" to keep it early in the morning to avoid the major upload times of most of our other Bulk fur uploaders, namely Ippiki and Queue. I cannot however stop other uploaders from uploading when they wish, I only uploaded late today as I ended up sleeping in.

I know a lot of people who don't enjoy gay art, or digimon, or a lot of things, but on more then one occasion "Some" type of content is going to be hogging the front page. The reason MLP is getting so much screen-time is its still pretty "Hot" right now, but the steam is finally grinding down, so it should be happening less and less.

Thank you for the dedication to upgrade the current blacklist function.

The problem I have is that when I search for "horse" I get pages that are about 80% My Little Pony, when that is really not what I'm looking for. And blacklisting won't help, because then it'll remove the worthwhile My Little Pony pictures that occasionally show up.

My problem is that the people who want to see My Little Pony can search for the tag and never see any non-MLP equine stuff. But the people who search for just "horse" will end up drowning in a sea of Friendship whether they want to or not.

I think the better solution to the My Little Pony problem is to make "horse" and "my little pony" two separate things. People who are specifically searching for "horse" are very rarely searching for My Little Pony as well.

The problem is, My Little Pony is about Ponies. Ponies are what? A kind of Horse. So by technicality, their going to be lumped together. But as river said, if yer not lookin for "MLP" just add -My_little_pony if your looking for explicit work add -Rating:S -Rating:Q

@KayleeTamiq: Just search for "horse -friendship_is_magic". It's a lot less work for you to exclude one tag than to remove a logical association of ponies and horses.

n00b here and I've got some questions. When I blacklist my_little_ponies and try to search "horse" all I can see is a single picture, what am I doing wrong?

Also, how do I search for two tags at the same time? Say if I want to search "horse" and "human female" at the same time how do I do it?

If you only see a single post on one page it's because every other result on that page is my little pony.

Just search for horse human female. It won't give you horses + human females, but nothing you do will ever do that, e621 simply doesn't have that capability.

This isn't the right place for it, but to make it fast:

When you blacklist something, it hides all the pictures you you don't have to see them. all of the pictures are still on the page, but hidden. if you go to the next page at the bottom, there will be more hidden pictures, and more unhidden pictures. you may better off searching for "horse -my_little_pony" until we get the new blacklisting system in place.

That's technically 3 tags.. I'll presume you're looking for iamges of horses with human females. the 'best' you can do is search for "horse human female" (and add in -my_little_pony)... and you should get horses with human females... but you should ALSO get female horses with humans, and other variations..

ah yes i remember that little flame war i participated in, that might have been taken out of context i a sure you i was telling them I don't care if its deleted since it been posted here its already been posted everywhere else. If you look back to the posts that we not deleted i even apologized(in a way) to said 'couple' and gave condolences to there well situation but reminded them that said picture is out now and floating around the net so they should calm down and move on sadly... i know all to well when a embarrassing picture hits the net and how helpless that battle is BUT i moved on and got over it and so shall they. I insure you it was never a snipe at the rules in anyway shape or form, i'm mostly a good guy, just more or less a parting lesson...a rather hard lesson.

well, no I was talking about the differentiation of horses from ponies.

my only problem is the amount of MLP content flooding the site, I can skip past a few picture easily, it's when a quarter of the pictures under a particular tag are MLP it gets annoying

Because I'm not sure anymore what you're hoping to accomplish by complaining, since a solution is already in the works.

@hg3300: IIRC, the pony uploaders try to upload during the dead part of the day, so it makes sense that there would be a cluster of MLP pics all on one page. Come back later in the day and they'll be buried.

Out of curisosity, how does one go about creating tag implications? The MLP characters should imply the my_little_pony tag (and the actual FiM characters should also imply friendship_is_magic).

My problem with the MLP flood is that I can't easily choose when to view the MLP art. I don't really mind MLP art for the most part. Well, I despise it when it's sexualized, but I have a blacklist for that. The stuff that gets through the blacklist is pretty okay in all. However, I usually browse the site without using a search at all, and this means I can't simply put in -mlp in my search to disable that when I'm sick of them. I cannot search for only negative tags anymore. I'd have to go and change my blacklist every time it becomes an issue.

That takes like 15 seconds each time, because I have to navigate through like 3 options to get to the blacklist. It's pretty annoying.

I didn't expect to get any answer. But since you answered

I believe the problem with the blacklist is the fact it's within a cookie. That's good for ignoring small stuff, but if you're trying to ignore something very popular, a cookie blacklist won't cut. If there are 3 pages worth of what you want to block, you'll see 3 pages of nothing. I have a sense the problem is that wide space of nothing. If that's not the problem then the blacklist function should work as it is. The black list was developed to be a very lazy way of handling normal tag queries, which is why there are empty spaces.

So.. maybe create a blocklist. The black list uses funky javascript to hide stuff, but the blocklist will literally block the posts making it impossible for a user to see it. You can create a new column on the user table that holds all the blocked tags and add that field for the tag tag in the sql_method along with deleted posts.

It could be a server side fix to the entire problem (which would be bad for the server).

That's the only way I can think to fix the problem.. if you try to fix it client side.. I can't see any possible way. I don't believe E621 use any hidden tags, having one or two per user shouldn't do much harm.

lets say the server runs a DB per tag

so on average that's 2 DBs
A blacklist will be about.. 5 tags.
so.. for every tag on your proposed blacklist, we gotta run the 2db+a blacklist line.. s0 we are looking at 17 dbs.. or 8.5 times more work for the server. I will not do that. I'd rather have users leave due to legitimate content then them leave due to the server being 8 times as slow.

Not only that but part of the blacklist is the ability to pull up the posts on the fly, you press a button to view the blacklisted images and make more database work. While simultaneously having to recalculate the post count for the new query. Even more work

The blacklist doesn't run one query. it has the possibility of running infinite queries... so now we have a security problem.. To alleviate attacks I could limit the blacklist function.. to maybe 2 queries.. which would piss off a lot of people. or let the site be very slow, or piss off a lot of people..

No. This solution is not viable at all. and this isn't just you I'm telling this to, it's the 20 other people who have suggested this not knowing that this will cripple the site functionality.

I've been a fan of the site for awhile, and just made an account so I could post my opinion, which is that no content should be blocked. All the people who don't like or want to see any my little pony stuff, don't look at it! I'm not a big fan of gay stuff, so I don't go out looking for gay stuff. Just because I don't like gay stuff doesn't mean that anything gay or gay oriented should be removed. On a site as this is, we all need to be tolerant of other peoples preferences and just stay away from what we don't want to have around.

I never used the blacklist because it doesn't work with cooliris. I'm fine with just ignoring stuff I don't like (or using -tags). Which is great because I like MLP anyway.

I fall in the camp of scratching my head as to why so much, hm, youth-oriented content is being posted to a predominantly(?) adult-oriented site? How about DeviantArt?...The solution you are working on sounds good to me, but my question is:

Will all this young-appealing artwork attract kids to this site and expose them to the adult-oriented content here? Or is the site set up to work with the content-blocking software and services for the protection of children?

Thanks in advance, hopefully it's a moot question as the thought of people unintentionally luring kids to an adult-oriented site makes me uncomfortable. Some of the stuff here could really mess up young minds.
