A city is a large settlement that acts as a hub of commerce, culture and population. Cities can vary in physical size, density, and population, but can range from tens of thousands to tens of millions of residents.
A city may be depicted in many ways, such as a skyline of towering buildings in the distance, or sprawling urban area from a high angle or aerial view, or be shown as in a street level scene with visibly densely packed buildings all around.
Tagging Notes
city vs. town
This distinction is visual and subjective, as in reality a large town can be a city, and a small city can be referred to as a town. For tagging purposes, "town scenes" should show little to no high rise buildings — a town scene may feature a street lined with low rise buildings (less than ten storeys), a mix of housing and shops, and/or a generally a more open and less dense urban area with low rise buildings.
city vs. cityscape
A cityscape is the urban equivalent of a landscape, where a broad view of an urban area is depicted. If a city is depicted in low detail, as a background, or within a scene that is mostly focused on a character, rather than the scenery, use city alone, rather than cityscape.
city vs. skyline
A skyline is a distant view of tall buildings, sometimes only depicted as simple shapes or silhouettes.
