A string bikini is a type of two-piece swimsuit that has several 'strings' in its design: the bikini top typically has one string along the underside of the cups, with another typically holding the top up around the neck. The bottoms have narrow bands across the hip; sometimes the strings are tied in a knot, as seen in the third image above.

While the design of the string bikini is quite skimpy by nature, many string bikinis cover a fair amount of the breast and groin, and are considered to be acceptable to wear in public places.

String bikinis that are exceptionally skimpy may be micro bikinis. Though it is important to remember that not all string bikinis are micro bikinis, and not all micro bikinis are string bikinis, even though there's a lot of overlap.

There is a type bathing suit which consists of narrow straps running from over the shoulder, across the breasts and down between the groin--this type of clothing is not a string bikini, despite being made up of strings. It is a sling_bikini instead.

The following is an example of a sling bikini. This should not be tagged as a string bikini:
