tabard

A tabard is a short coat often seen worn by men during the middle ages. It came in sleeveless or short sleeved forms, and often involved shoulder pieces. Some included embroidery on the front, often with a coat of arms.

A tabard doesn't extend much below covering the groin – quite typically just above halfway through the thighs. Longer (coats of arms, especially those typically identifying crusader knights) are monastic scapulars.
