Otherwise known as the horse family, Equidae comprises all species of equid as well as extinct species and fictional ones. Equids are members of the order Perissodactyla, or odd-toed ungulates, along with tapirs and rhinoceroses. This family first arose about 54 million years ago during the early Eocene epoch. Most members of this family are extinct, with all extant members belonging to the equinae subfamily and, more specifically, the Equus genus. Notable members of the Equidae family include the domestic horse, donkey, and various species of zebra, though the unicorn and derivatives tend to look very horselike.
