Hierarchy play is the act of two characters at minimum, at least one of which is of higher or lower rank in the social hierarchy or food chain, involved in sexual activities, especially when the character of lower rank is the topping and/or dominant partner.

Not to be confused with power_play, which involves the weaker of the two characters, either physically or in other areas relating to battle, taking the role of a top and/or dom, though the two tags can overlap.
