Playboy is an American men's lifestyle and entertainment magazine founded in 1953 by Hugh Marston Hefner (1926–2017). Known for its centerfolds of nude and semi-nude models (Playmates), Playboy played an important role in the sexual revolution and remains one of the world's best-known brands.
One of the most recognizable iconography of the Playboy brand is the logo: a silhouette of a rabbit's head wearing a bow collar. Illustrated in an endnote of the second issue by Arthur Paul, the Playboy bunny was adopted as mascot for the "humorous sexual connotation" of rabbits and the drawing's "frisky and playful" nature. This marketing has also included and popularized use of bunny costumes.
For tagging purposes, any depiction of Playboy-inspired images, logos, and/or names are perfectly fine as well. Due to the recognition and simple compound name of the brand, it is often subject to parody.
Trivia:
- The Playboy bunny quickly was adopted as a military aircraft insignia for the United States Navy's VX-4, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Four (1952–1994).
- Founder Hugh Hefner is the taxonomic namesake of the Lower Keys marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri; James D. Lazell Jr, 1984), an endangered subspecies of marsh rabbit.
- In 1970, Playboy became the first gentleman's magazine to be printed in braille (written segments only).
