Rural areas, sometimes called "the countryside" are large areas outside of town or cities, which are more sparsely populated, and agricultural industries (e.g. ranches and farms) or resource extraction (mining or logging) are the primary economic activities.

A rural scene may show a character working on a farm, standing near a set of isolated railway tracks, or in the parking lot of a motel or gas station.
