The Fall of Satan ~Gustav Dore
The concept of a Fallen Angel originates from Abrahamic Texts an belief systems. It describes when an Angel sins and is subsequently cast out from Heaven. It is often assumed that after this happens the Fallen Angel becomes a demon and is sent either to Earth or Hell.
The most famous Fallen Angel is known as Lucifer, who believed himself to be equal if not greater than God and convinced about a third of Heaven's angelic population into rebelling against God. They were subsequently defeated and banished from Heaven.
Fallen Angels are frequently depicted in artwork as angels literally falling out of the sky or angels with a mixture of stereotypically demonic figures such as black or bat-like wings, a Halo and Horns, darker skin pigments, animal features such as a tail or slit pupils.
The War of Heaven and subsequent casting down of Angels is most notably depicted in John Milton's "Paradise Lost". In addition to Lucifer (now known as Satan), other former angels (refered to as Devils) featured in the novel include, Beelzebub, Mammon, Belial, Mulciber, Moloch, Belphegor, Baalem, Ashtaroth, Astarte, Astoreth, Dagon, Rimmon, Osiris, Isis, and Orus.
