Topic: Tagging Projects, (or, How YOU Can Help!)

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

So with all of the aliases and implications brought up lately, there's a lot of work that needs to be done... So, if you've found yourself recently saying "I want to help, but how...?" this is an ongoing list of things that need to be done, that YOU can help with. :)

Please read carefully, make sure you understand the task. ASK if you have any questions (a PM or a reply here will do), and please reply, or message me to let me know you've started working on something, that way people are not stepping on eachother's toes.

Don't feel like taking on a large project? It's okay to pick something and spend a few minutes retagging some of the images. Every little bit helps. :)

I'm goign to try and keep this post updated with the status of each project, so please keep me up to date on your progress... also, there's no shame in saying "I don't have time anymore" or "This set of tags isn't my cup of tea and I'm not enjoying this at all".. :) So, please, keep me informed.

Likewise, If you HAVE a project that you'd like some help with, feel free to PM me with the details, and we'll get it posted here :D

Projects are in no particular order, and there are many others on the way :)

The Cryptid Project

Goal: Tidy the unknown_species tag.

IMPORTANT -- Don't just delete it ._. That does no one any good.

  • Some unknown species are obvious! post #150519 -- clearly, that is a giraffe and a--holy crap, what the fuck is that THING. Uhhhh..... Okay. Maybe it's a dragon? or.. or a lion? some kind of ... dragon lion rebar cyber porcupine? O_O
  • And there you have the base of the problem. what *IS* that? You can guess, but it's just a guess.
  • Well, let's see... We have an artist tag and a chracter tag. Let's look at the character tag... nope, puzzle is the giraffe. The artist.. draws a lot of things, like the giraffe.. so the Cryptid isn't likely to be illuminated there.
  • There's a source link! Let's see, it takes us to the artist's main page, so let's go into their gallery to look for this drawing... keep going.. back about 3 pages annnd.. the description and the tags give nothing away.
  • ... I still have no idea what that thing is.
  • the artist mentioend another piece of art that this was based off of. let's go look.
  • SCORE! The art itself was a solo picture of the giraffe, but they mention "This picture later went on to inspire two sets of commissions! One of Puzzle and Nyrath, and another with Puzzle, Diamond and a dragon!" So, this clearly isn't the threesome... how about this "nyrath" character?
  • Ah, 3 pictures on the same page titled Nyrath's secret Grimoire.... and it's clearly the same character. and THERE we discover that she is a demon.
  • Now we look at the art again. Does that creature look like a demon? ... Yes.
  • Tag demon. YAY! 1 down.

THE TRUTH: post #135619 -- there are a lot of things liek this that are so obviously not AYTHING found in nature. These are unknown species. Just leave them alone, and move on to the next thumbnail. This is not a tag that can be emptied, nor should it be.

Rating:Questionable/safe

Goal: Check rating:q images for explicit content.

This is a huge project. but it's easy to pick up and put down at a moment's notice.
Essentially, the default rating on e621 is questionable, and a user who forgets to adjust the rating when uploading might upload safe or explicit content as questionable. The goal of this task is to go through the questionable images, and rag them E or S if needed. Easiest way to do this it to search rating:q pussy or rating:s Penis :)

Magic Users -- See Also: Tag Group:Magic

Goal: Tidy up the magic_user Tag, and apply related tags to images

There are a number of different magic user types. Go through the magic_user tag, tag as appropriate. Some images may have multiple words applied to it, based off of physical appearance, and tag implications.

  • Magic_user - Generic wizard/sorceror/mage types. Themes should include robes, wizard hats, arcane casting types.
  • Necromancer - Raiser of the dead. Themes should involve the walking dead, and probably a very goth-ish look.
  • Witch - Similar to a spellcaster. often, but not always female, pointed hats, broomsticks.
  • Tribal_spellcaster - The 'natural' magic casters. Loincloths, beads, skulls, feathers, etc for a 'tribal' look. Split into:
    • druid - largely composed of warcraft images, druids are typically shapechangers, nature walkers, and so forth.
    • shaman - Feathers, beads and leather. Less "peaceful" looking then druids.
    • witch_doctor - More 'sinister' looking. voodoo, skulls, bits of bone, facepaint, voodoo_dolls etc.
  • Holy_spellcaster - Priests, clerics and paladins who cast magic, as opposed to preaching the word of a god. Often, these will be warcraft, or RPG related.

Magic Users, part two: magic and holy_spellcaster

Goal: Walk through the magic tag, look for characters who's visuals match up with the 'stereotype' images for any of the more specific types of magic user, and tag appropriately. Also, fill out Holy_spellcaster by going through Priest, cleric and paladin, to the criteria above, and add related tags.

Masturbation

This is a simple one for picking up and putting down at any given point in time. Very simple and black-and-white with it's requirements.

Goal: Tidy up fingering, handjob
A poorly chosen set of implications had handjob and fingering both implying masturbation. However, masturbation is something you do to yourself.

This task is most easily accomplished by searching handjob masturbation -solo or fingering masturbation -solo and going through the results.

  • Look at each image to be certain of the contents if there's any confusion.
  • if you find an image of a character masturbating alone, please tag them with solo
  • For images of characters manually stimulating each other, tag mutual masturbation
  • If one character is giving the other a reach_around, then it does not count.

Mutual mastubation

Goal: Ensure that everything in the mutual_masturbation tag is both mutual, and masturbation.

  • Mutual masturbation is defined as either two (or more) people reaching over and manually--with their hands--pleasuring each other.

Things that don't count:

  • A character being pleasured and the other is not
  • A character is being given a handjob while the other is getting oral.
  • Using a double ended dildo
  • Two characters rubbing their cocks/pussy together, unless both are using hands to touch also. (see: frottage or tribadism)
  • A character on their knees pleasuring two others, unless being pleasured by one they are pleasuring.
  • Blowjobs.

This is going to involve a LOT of retaging D: only images like these: post #116885 post #123084 post #79812 should be here.

Keep an eye on...

These are completed projects that will need a little maintenance now and then. :)

Tag me!

Goal: Keep tagme empty :) --also, to tag any images with tagme if they're low on tags so you can find and tag 'em later~~

  • Try for at least 10 tags per image. If you can't make it, leave tagme on the picture and try again later :)

Tips n' Tricks for Faster Tagging

So! You've decided to take on a sizable tagging project! CONGRATS! :D You're now 20% awesomer!

Now, to tagging! The first thing you may notice is that you're opening a LOT of pictures and probably often typing the same thing, over and over again, if you're doing one specific task or another. Perhaps you've taken to copying and pasting, when you can.

"But, surely there's a better way to do this!" you exclaim, overwhelmed. And you'd be correct!

EVERYONE has access to a sweet and simple little tool that will make your tagging flow much more smoothly. Let's check it out.

If you click on My Account at the top of the screen, you'll notice a number of options pop up for you to examine. right now, we're interested in Settings.

Here in the settings screen, we have a number of options... At the top is the ever popular blacklist...

Blacklist

The blacklist can actually be a pretty awesome tool when you're trying to tag certain things. For example: I'm busy going through 'handjob' and removing the masturbation tag from all of the image where someone is giving someone else a handjob. Clearly, I won't need to do *anything* to any 'solo' images, so I could search handjob masturbation -solo or, I could add 'solo' to my blacklist while I'm working on my project, and be much kinder to the server. :)

There are many ways that utility can be used besides hiding your squicks from your eyes. :) But, moving along... 4 'boxes' down, You'll see a box reading 'uploaded tags'...

Uploaded Tags

Uploaded tags are displayed below an image when you go to edit the tags or upload an image. It's list of tags that you can click on, and it will be applied to the text box for you to save a few minutes later.

You make a list of tags in the box--I separate them by new lines, but spaces WILL work, though it'll display the same both ways later--.. chose tags that you are frequently adding, or frequently removing from an image. if an image contains a tag, you can click on the tag in your list to remove it, then again to re-add it.

Upgraded accounts

If you've generally been awesome, and have earned an upgraded account, you have access to these fun things called tag scripts which you can read about here: http://e621.net/help/tag_scripts

if we find a Comic or webcomic with "Art" is it ok to just remove the art tag? I am assuming so although I may be making an ass of myself and another.

/*Edit*/ Would we replace a musician playing music to creating_art?

asked b/c i removed the art tag from post #29067

/*Edit2*/ Art tag cleared. there wasn't many pics left with it posted. Probably just a bit of recent tagging cleanup.

yep.

I'd say no, generally, maybe creating_music instead. dunno if ther'es a better tag.

I still see about 40 pictures in there o.o

For something like that, inspired_by_proper_art seems appropriate.

No, it's not.. eh.. here, let me explain inspired by proper art again:

post #136680 and http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/2/2a/20100305202944!Claude_Monet_-_Jean_Monet_on_his_Hobby_Horse.jpg

post #110573 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sandro_Botticelli_-_La_nascita_di_Venere_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

post #6588 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AlloriSusanna.jpg

or in a few cases, having a strong effort to render the image of the same style of an artist.

Updated by anonymous

And that is exactly why I said it seems appropriate. it seems that a huge effort went into making it appear to be done in the Classical art style. I couldn't name ONE of the artists it was based upon, true, but as a non-connesseur(sp) it looks like any one of them could have painted it.

A classical art STYLE, yes, but it's not a mimiced image, or a mimiced style of someone distinct.

It IS a fine piece of work, however, putting it into the other tag would make the tag's purpose more vague.

a "classical art style" would be better served as a tag, or as a pool, perhaps :D

Oh! I didn't see this... go for it :) 'Art' is emptied out thanks to swamproot :) But I do need someone to look through the related art-tags as described. Mostly, this is gonna be painting and picture frame that need tidying up. If you see anything that doens't have a tag already, make it up, just be sure to add them to tag group:art :)

Go through the Oni tag and clean up which are oni (demons) and which are done by Oni (artist). Tag the ones that are oni (demons) with demon instead, then artist Oni.

  • TAG GROUPS -- find something, and start making a list of tags that relate to it. colors, clothing, species, positions... I'm busy writing one for arm positions. :P

tag peeing if they're currently peeing or remove if neccessary, and watersports are for sexual pleasure (i.e. peeing on or drinking pee.) but so far as i've looked i didnt really see many incorrect tags and fix'd all the ones i did notice.

What's left to re-tag at the moment?

Edit: How do we go about tagging comics and individual pages (e.g. one page features a certain character, but the other pages don't... or a few pages feature sex, the rest don't)?
Do we tag what's in the comic or what's on that page? I ask because I've seen comic tagging done both of those ways.

Everything~~

I don't know about comics--that might be a good discussion topic to bring up. BUt generally 'tag what you see' is a good rule of thumb. Only 'exceptions I can think of might be traps, and orientation on images just so peopel don't get rude surprises.. but I dunno.

But, as far as tagging goes, there are a number of projects on the front page of this thread...

There's also one I just had brought up about going through translation_request and removing translation_request from images that have already been translated and replacing with translated :D

I don't mean to say I don't appreciate you all making sure these are properly tagged, but I'm not convinced we need a running commentary of the status of tagme's. They'll continue to crop up, and we just have to be vigilant and continue to clear them out. But I think we need to shift this forum back to other projects. Keep it for questions about specific projects, ideas for new ones, the like. I just don't want it to get so long that it gets avoided just because people can't find what they need amongst all the tagme stuff.

But keep up the good work with the tagme's, that's good shit.

There's been a recent sleu of tagme, a lack of tagging, and also improper tagging.

Am I one of a few people fixing tags now? I thought there was a lot more people helping tag.

If I may, I think it's time to implement a... tagging restriction of sorts. A sort of alias that removes the unwanted tags or changes them universally to something singular like invalid_tag or even a twist on something that someone said above: prevent the post from being uploaded if it contains certain tags.

Ideas?

Suggested tagging project: GENDER
There are a whole bunch of images without any gender tags at all, which is bad (especially when they're rating:e). This needs fixing. The easiest way to do this is with a change to your blacklist: blacklisting male, female, intersex, and ambiguous_gender will leave only posts without gender tags.

Updated by anonymous

SnowWolf said:

Is it all possible to alias it to nothing? As to say: a user puts invalid_tag into the tag list and when he/she clicks save changes, it does not appear. Like how when you type in gay, the system automatically puts in male.

The tagme tag could be like this too, but now that I'm thinking about it... that would require more scripting. Like, if tagme is in a tag list with three or less tags, it stays there until someone adds four or more tags to the list; then the tagme removes itself from the tag list. How's that sound?

-Your Friendly Neighborhood Chimera,
AshuraK

PS: By the way, Snowy, great idea!

Updated by anonymous

*blinks*

Okay..

An implication basically says "If X if present, tag Y."
An alias basically says "If X if present, delete X and tag Y instead."

I'm not experimenting with tags and aliases right now, but I'm presuming that since we have a number of things that are aliased to invalid_tag that we can't do that. Further, leaving invalid tag visible cues people in to the fact that something they typed in doesn't work. Invalid tag is not just "you typoed"... it's "that word, we don't want it as a tag at all" .. it's things like "sexy", "sfw" "crap_art", "furry", "No_anus" ..

All this said, I think tagme is automatically put on images with zero tags. but I'm pretty sure we'd have to crawl into the code to make that adjustment... but it might be possible to make it appear on anything with less than X number of tags... but to make it automatically disappear would probably be a TON of work... besides. as far as tagmes go, 10 is the minimum. most images can manage 20-30 tags without stretching.. so why remove something that could still be improved.

"tagme" is , after all, sometimes placed on images that could just be better tagged still. Take, for example, an absolutely everyone image with 500 characters. 10 tags is not enough. :)

Do we really need to get into specific breeds like that that aren't well-represented? i mean, I understand for example border collie or golden retriever or rottweiler, since they're common breeds.

The blue heeler is a specific breed. It's as valid as the collie or retriever. Just because it's less prevalent doesn't mean it isn't deserving of a tag.

Also, thanks Snow!

dude... why not? It's as valid as any other breed.

edit

It IS a popular breed. Every horse ranch I've been to has one. they are great herd dogs and extremely smart and protective. Plus there are 2 other tags for blue heeler. We can't omit breeds just because they are less well known. To me, it's like excluding minorities just because there are fewer of them.

There's no reason NOT to tag something if there's reasonable doubt.

the whole idea behind tagging is 'tag what you see'. If it looks like a dalmatian, sounds like a dalmatian, acts like a dalmatian and is treated by everyone like they're a dalmatian.. then dalmatian should be tagged.... ... even if the artist says "no, he's a wolf/cat/flamingo."

in my perfect world, each dog has a breed tag (that implies dog), and a page on wiki that says "by the way, if you like dobermans, you might also want to browse through rottweiler because they look a lot alike."

That said, Do we NEEEED tags for the obscure-er dog breeds? Like, say a Basque Shepherd Dog? No, not really. They look a lot like a golden retriever.

But, uh, mister blue heeler? looks a lot like what I keet when I type 'blue heeler' into google image search.

that said.. should Blue heeler alias to Austrailian cattle dog? yep, probably. Might do that in a few minutes if I can confirm that blue heelers aren't a specific sub variation of them.

That said, I've also been a big fan of demarking animals with Merle fur patterns. That said, I'm a bit disgruntled to see that someone, somewhere, took the time to untag all of the images I'd tagged with merle, once upon a time. Yay.

Anyway, tl;dr -- an visually identifyable dog breed should be tagged, because it assists people in further locating specifically what they want. The LACK of tags for most dog breeds is due to a lack of tagging, and a lack of artists adaquatly illustrating what breed a dog character is. (is it a wolf or a dog? who knows! hell, some artists canine and feline are confusing.)

Additionally.. i'd really love it if someone would work on tag group:dog -- there's already half a list over at dog that I jotted together off the top of my head the other day.

Any dog enthusists out there want to take on a puppy tagging project? tagging breeds, things like blue_merle, and red_merle, consolidating redundant tags and filling out a list of dog breeds on a wiki page, so I can go through and make sure they all imply dog?

I'd love to Snow but am swamped right now. :D I'll get back to mass tagging again soon. This sounds like a fun one!

Sweet! :D I'd do it myself but I"m busy as all hell lately, and I"m really not a doggy person. I'd spent 3/4ths of my time on wikipedia ;_;

I've been starting to go through and tag monochrome images that need that tag. Included in that are images with erasable blue setup lines showing along with black ink. I'm a little iffy about images with greyscale shading, but if it was all done with one color of pencil or ink, I figure it qualifies. This is sort of to say thank you for the much improved blacklist function.

I've noticed some of you still like to go around deleting tagmes without actually bothering to help add tags to them.
That isn't helpful.

Just a thought I had about the pools... why not tag everything in the pooled comic in, like, a keyword field for the pool?
I'm hoping that, with some tweaking, the pool search function can work like the post search function, with keywords being entered to search for relevant pools.
The title, artist and characters would be entered in there too. Well, either that, or give the title, artist and characters each their own separate field in the pool's description.
I would scrape up a layout to make sense of my jibberish, but I don't have access to a working computer yet.
I'm hoping that we won't tag the name of the comic anymore.

Here's another quick one for my helpful taggers:

invalid_background is a tag that is applied to an image whenever someone tries to tag 'colored background' or 'background' as both of those are too vague.

Right now, there are about 120 images tagged with invalid_background, and they need to all be swapped out for other backgrounds, as detailed in tag group:background ... this is a short project that requires the tagger to make a lot of 'judgement' calls on how a background is defined.

additionally, if you're on a background tagging roll, abstract background needs cleaning out. this is more easily done by one with an upgraded account who knows how to use tag scripts, as most of the backgrounds there can be eyeballed from the thumbnail, and quickly tagged. this is a larger project, but a much simpler one, as all it is is determining color, mostly. Obviously, the color blind need not apply XD

:( I just checked, no aliases or implications... if you'd like, I could alias abstract into invalid background, but I'd rather get those numbers down more first.

Also, you are awesome <3

Found a few pics in the tagme tag, clearing those up by either adding tags or just getting rid of the tagme tags. So I'm certain, anything with 10 tags or more doesn't need tagme, right? I'll also be adding tags to those that need them.

this is generally true, however some pictures have a lot of possibility for more tags to be added.. so if a picture has about 10 tags, but still has the tagme tag, give it another look and see if you can see anything obvious that needs tagging.. fur/hair/eye colors, clothing, etc will generally get you at least 10 tags in and of themselves. :) I take a lot of things with under 15 tags with tag me jsut because I think they deserve more tags. :) 10 is kind of a happyish minimum. <3

thank you for your help! :D
