Topic: [FAQ] e621 Survival Guide

Posted under General

What in the god damn did I come back to. "6 months of notice" my ass, I don't dig through the forums for site-changing news, and neither does 95% of the userbase. If I'd known about the beta 6 months ago, I would've had plenty of time to contribute. Now I work a fulltime job, and we're stuck with these awful, broken changes and no longer have the original website to turn to for reference. You're essentially forcing us to remake the entire website from memory.

Why in the hell would you plan a full rewrite of your entire website and not give any notice outside of a single pinned forum post amongst the sea of other pinned forum posts? This is something you should write in big, bold letters and pin to the top of every web page, or at the least have it announced in your site news. There's absolutely no excuse for the utter lack of communication given here. Hell, you haven't even explained WHY you're rewriting the entire site nor why we can't switch back to the old one.

If you could at least temporarily allow us to switch back to the old theme, that would help me a ton with rewriting the code. Picking apart butchered code from The Wayback Machine isn't a great option.

Is it too late to give feedback on the new layout? I wish I knew about the beta so I could've given proper feedback on it before. I haven't seen this version of the site too much yet, but these are things that are bugging me so far:
-I'm not a fan of the way parent/child posts and image pools are presented. They might be fine on mobile, but on desktop it's harder to spot. Parent/Child posts should especially be on the top of the page and it shouldn't be hiding with the other blue boxes below the actual post.
-I also love-hate the new search results page. More in one glance can be nice, but it's hard to pick out details in some images right away. I'm looking at the previous version and I get that it's getting rid of unused screen space with the larger icon grid, but it's at the cost of focus on the screen. I might just get used to this over time though.
-GIFs and WEBMs are also now indistinguishable from the thumbnails, which sucks when a poster is kind enough to upload both versions and now we have to look through both posts to find the version for our liking.
-A thing that really bugs me, though, is that the text on the browser tabs are prioritized weirdly. I liked the format of "#post by (artist)", but now it's a random tag (such as drawn by, nintendo and etc drawn by, or character drawn by (artist)". Seeing a bunch of "nintendo and etc drawn by" in the tabs makes it hard to distinguish posts. It's inconsistent and worse.
-On that note, "drawn by" is a poor format choice, considering some posts aren't drawn (ie 3d modeled). Simply "by" reduces text clutter and works.

Like another people here pointed out, the announcement window does a terrible job
To me the thing only shows any news 1 TIME, after that goes in its collapsed state untill you click on it or dismiss it

Btw
Other boorus have this thing where you can fav and thumbs up/down a pic straight from its thumbnail and can tell if you already did
also animated thumbnails pls?

Both the third party tools I started to exclusively access e6 thru have been borked by this update so that's cool I guess

Basically ,
"We screwed up , fuck you"

Nice.
We'll remember that.

And nobody saw that notice about an incoming change. Nobody. Stop finding excuses like losers.

How do I disable the mobile view?

There are multiple ways. The quickest (which also works without an account) is to scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Disable mobile mode support".
The other option is to disable it in your (advanced) account settings, where it's called "Responsive Mode". Simply go to settings, click "Advanced", then disable responsive mode. Be sure to check the other settings as well, there's a few new items there that are pretty self explanatory.

How do I disable the gestures?

Second verse same as the first, in your account settings under advanced.

How do I get the old themes back?

You don't. Those are no longer compatible with the new site and had to be axed. Though we're probably bringing them back one by one as time goes on. Right now they're on the bottom of the list of things that need doing.

The current layout is terrible.

It will be improved and polished as time goes on. Getting the new codebase up and running had a higher priority than making it look pretty.

Change it back.

No. The beta was open and public for nearly 5 months. We gave ample warning and opportunity to chime in with the feedback.

Why'd you release this before it was polished? Not hating just questioning this decision

The layout kinda looks (how do I say this) tight for the new mobile site. Although I'm currently using my phone, so I have no opinion yet for my tablet and desktop.

It still looks nice though. What remains is the polish.

No, basically what they said is "You screwed up, fuck you".
It's somehow the userbase fault if stuff doesn't work, because people coming on a porn site for porn didn't see the beta notice, and no matter what happens, it'll stay that way, with its truckload of objectively awful changes.

barker said:

I think you will find that most people who actually browsed the forums did see the multiple notices, since one or the other of them were pinned to the top of the forum during the aforementioned 5 months,
It was pretty hard to miss actually, IF you browsed the forums. It just turns out that making the assumption that most people WOULD drop in to the forum occasionally might have been incorrect.

Of course we don't know the actual statistics here, we only know that some people clearly didn't visit the forum / know of the forum's existence, and that these particular people also did not read the news item about the beta.

I've just discovered an intentional change is the cap of 80,000 favorites and as someone currently sat at about 160k I'm not too sure how to go about handling that. Since there was no upper limit before, I just went about favoriting anything I might want to come back to.

I suppose a constructive thing would be for the error message to be replaced with "You have favorited too many things, that's why you cannot favourite this" but I'm not savvy enough to know of any way to mass exodus favorites from my list and even then, I'd be concerned of losing something I liked.

What am I supposed to do? Have multiple accounts?

An update so garbo, it made people still in the closet to create an account just to say exactly what you expected. This redesign is worst than the reddit redesign. I use to come here daily and I never had an account. That's going to change I guess.

As a honest critique, the design is cumbersome. I feel that this is caused by being taken to a gallery full of stuff that not everyone may want to see. I barely looked around so far but this is by far the most apparent flaw.

Hi. First time posting, guess it won't be my last now (forced to make an account. Thanks for that...). You know, of all the sites I visited, e621 used to be the only one that worked (mostly) on my laptop. See, my laptop is old and pretty janky, I tried to install IE11 (Chrome is my go-to, but I use IE to keep my smut separate from my google account) but that resulted in SIX bluescreens within 30 minutes, so I have to use IE8 as it's the only thing that still works (my laptop is ten years old, just fyi). However, FA changed and made it harder to use. But I persisted cos I had no choice. Now e621 changed and I know what you're thinking: Here we go, another one complaining about the new look.

In truth, I couldn't give less of a damn about the new look. Nor could I care about search features being jank. I could try find a way around it, I always do when things screw up, everything looks ugly on IE too.

No, see, my biggest problem is THE AUTOMATIC BLOODY BLACKLIST! Do you know HOW many different bloody passwords I ALREADY have for different sites!? It'd be pushing 50 if I didn't use Facebook to log into certain ones! (and even then that has drawbacks) This site used to be "jump on, look up stuff, click tongue, nice". Now, I gotta screw about with an account I never wanted to bypass the automatic blacklist of the unregistered. Then, if I get banned for whatever reason, then the entire thing was pointless and I lose access to one of the biggest furry smut sites I know! (I don't use R34 much, too much weird stuff, too many people having arguments in the comments about interracial porn... On a porn site.... Oy vey...)

So thank you for pissing in the cheerios that was the simple act of looking up porn. Really. Just what I wanted, MORE complications to simple things!

Edit: Love how many people complaining are the same as me, disgruntled "forced to make an account"ers. It just shows you how big a screw up it is when I'm part of the crowd (and I'm NEVER part of the crowd. Literally. Ever).

Edit 2: Oh, and seeing as people are talking about how long they've used the site, mine is 10 years. Used it ever since I got online (cos furry porn, duh). I also REALLY hate change. Not because I'm old and bias, but because change normally means "so we took what you like and fucked it". I have yet to be proven wrong with that.

Updated

forced to make an account to disable your stupid blacklist, that said i made this account to say these changes mean I won't be coming back to this site after years of daily visits.

EDIT:
oh cool your trash "improvements" make it so i cant delete the useless account i was forced to make, great, thanks guys, way to ruin porn and something as simple as deleting a damn account, how do you even mess up that badly
second edit:
your "improvements" made it so i can change my name without any approval oh and you somehow built the name request page backwards!? the damn description field is sized for a new name and the name field can take a paragraph comfortably >.> please find a new job

You can't make such a drastic, uncalled, unwanted, unneeded change to the website that objectively made it worse, then write these pissant, passive-aggressive FAQ responses and just expect everything to be perfectly fine. It doesn't work like that.

This right here, one of the most relevant things written in the whole thread
They wrote the whole thing like they knew right well there was going to be a massive backlash, then preemptively acted super condescending about it. It's a very bad idea to talk down to your userbase, especially in a community as infamous and prone to drama as the furry community.

So, beforehand we were able to see the difference between gifs/animations separate from webm's or videos, but now they all share the same thing that denotes that it's an animation.

Can we get something that lets you know what is and isn't a webm versus regular animations? Thanks.

There is always a backlash, though. Breaking changes seem to reliably have that effect on people. It's one of those impossible frustrating things about being a developer.
Is it really better to pretend that it's not gonna happen?

Adding a note for people who use RSS:

1. RSS atom url has changed from /post/atom?tags=x+y+z to posts.atom?tags=x+y+z . There is an automatic HTTP 200 redirect (but I'm not sure whether this will do the right thing for all RSS readers)

2. The title and description fields have been unswapped (I say unswapped because in the previous format, the title held the description [tags])

Thanks for this. I was wondering why I was getting a massive influx of old already posted submissions in my RSS feed. (617 articles, yay.)

I think the formatting of the article has changed, more like swapped. Previously the tags were the article header, and only a thumbnail of the post as the description. The new format has additional post info as the article header and the description has the thumbnail and tags.

Examples:

"Before - all posts were in this format":\https://i.imgur.com/vtrs6CP.png

"Now (1)":\https://i.imgur.com/mDWrBjU.png

"Now (2)":\https://i.imgur.com/D5Je7d4.png

Am I using DText right with the links? The preview doesn't seem to work properly.

Personally I like this new RSS format, it does away with the unnecessary long tag article headers and just has a nice brief description of the post.

+1 to this. think of the mobile data users!

imagine posting a livid wall of text on an online forum complaining about a fetish porn site undergoing maintenance. some of you need to seriously reevaluate your lives since this is clearly something that makes a notable effect on you.

my problems with the new layout are mostly the use of space.

i like that the blacklist toggle is now permanent. tag autofill and tag count will be very useful when tagging a post but not knowing the phrasing/importance/existence of the tag you're thinking of applying. the user profile section seems wonky and unfinished. and i don't understand the benefit of having character titles appear as the webpage tab description when browsing on a post. but the biggest irk for me so far is just that sometimes text/objects seem to be too large, and sometimes they seem to small. For instance, these forum boxes were visually much better when they didn't take up the entire width. and the header tabs at the top of the screen were better when they filled the entire space horizontally.

You should still do something like give people the option to switch to and from the current and old layouts. I wasn't even aware that a change would be made in the first place, so I couldn't do anything about it, and I'm sure many others are in the same boat.

It's at the bottom. If i could i would take a picture and circle it and up load it. Bottom all the way til swiping with your finger no longer moves the screenclick the 4th button after contacts mine currently says"disable mobile mode support" because i already did click it. Site went back to the way it used to be for me.

savageorange said:

There is no upvote/downvote mode though.

Fave is under the picture now just above comments. Its big you shouldn't miss it. Also on side bar under options you have the option to click favorite it there. Then there is score with an up arrow and a down arrow those are clickable. Umm it changes the score.

I'm fine with changing the code if it's for something important like security or stopping DDoS attacks. I do hope some of the formatting and search functionality issues are high priorities.

One things I've noticed lately on this site is how many posts use Flash animation. If creators or fans like these, I recommend converting them using Swivel or something. I'm trying to go cold turkey on flash, but all these animations keep making me want to enable it out of curiosity. Not that I won't try and convert the animations myself, just a bit of a community suggestion.

I use desktop a lot, but I think the people who only have phones are a higher priority. If you can get the mobile experience working it'll be big because those devices have less adaptability to interface issues.

Could we at least get a "classic" view mode under our account settings like fa has, i dont really have anything against the new layout since i haven't spent much time getting used to it, i just prefer the old one also it would be nice to use it while the new layout is being polished off

You missed the context, they were asking about fav/upvote *from the thumbnail view*.

Whoa, they capped favorites? I hope that isn't permanent. I mean, this is supposed to be an upgrade. I can understand a temporary hardware limitation, but this really should be a fixable issue.

The "reply" button throws you back to the top of the page instead of to the bottom of the page. Its throwing off my groove. Instead of just posting complaints try reading the comments. You may find a fix.

Omg serously. I thought i had a lot of favorites its good to know i have 60k faves left.

Ohh i thought you needed help finding the buttons my bad. I once smoked weed. I knew the back story and what brought them to that point of random back ground people in soaps. I now don't smoke weed anymore and i also don't look into context it always seems to be in an angry voice.

Hows you guna know what a picture is and if its got acceptable clearity from the thumbnail. Thats just lasy. Go in check and make sure that stuff is QL. If your guna "speed date" your porn you might be flapping to stuff on your blacklist.

Yes, unfortunately. It took me a while of searching before I realized my error message was not "This functionality is down for a bit while the new site is being implemented" but was in fact, INTENDED. I'm mad that this happened in the first place. I'm peeved they didn't bother to tell anyone outside of the forum posts, especially if it was by design.

Here's the relevant forum.

https://e621.net/forum_topics/25717

I think I could get used to the new layout if I could sort my sets by latest added and the random button was added back (or if there was another way to go from one random picture to another).

I guess I'll be back in a few weeks to see if things have improved or not.

I kinda like it to be honest, aside from the Popular section being gone and got replaced with Hot. I recommend putting more visible and more easily accessible up and down vote buttons like on reddit, to encurage voting.

Uh, is it just me or is searching by range just not working at all now? I try setting a range using .. between the ranges and it's just completely ignoring it. Or was the range indicator changed? If it was, you should probably change the cheatsheet.

I see both positive and negative (though polite and respectful from what I'm seeing) thoughts on the new look to the site. So far, my thoughts are running towards the positive. I'm thankful for the increased tag limit when searching. I feel it will help in narrowing my searches better. Overall, feels like a job well done so far.

I guess e621 is now a subsidiary of youtube

Seriously what was wrong with the old one

I checked the beta a few weeks ago and I just thought “wow this is really incomplete but it will probably improve” and now it’s basically the exact same

I can not understand the motivations that tech sites have for changing the user interface. Especially on a site like this where frankly most people are here to masturbate

lol at these "forced to make an account" jackasses. imagine publicly admitting that you're upset that e621 made it _slightly_ harder for pedophiles to get off

To chime in about something positive: Raised tag limit of 40 per search is a godsend (seriously!); search completion is super handy (which was always a guessing game for the longer tags before the update); while it has it's problems, the mobile version is certainly a welcome addition; custom CSS support is very nice.

While I do agree that the theme is a bit.. unfinished at best, there is no denying that there are some very handy new features added in this update (In my opinion).

It's not just young shit that's auto blacklisted though. Also I swear this shit keeps happening, don't know why people are trying to turn the internet into an extension of real life by making you sign in to fucking everything and add information about you to it. Plus designing shit for the minority. Happens with more and more things as time goes on it seems, games are balanced for the competitive scene, sites are designed for the users with accounts despite the massive majority of traffic being from anonymous users, etc.

Also what’s the reason for arbitrary limits on the number of favorites? If it’s by necessity for site stability that’s fine but if there’s no real reason then what’s the point?

Problems:

-No 'Welcome Page', everyone new is blasted with """Safe""" images.

-UI looks ugly, the placement looks like it was made in a few hours, and had no testing whatsoever.

-'Popular' is no longer present under 'Posts', and now requires a more clicks to reach it, hidden somewhere out of sight. A horrible choice for "Quick" users, or for every really.

-'Favourites' are now sorted by 'Upload Date'. For "Whale" users with tens of thousands of pictures, this will be a huge issue. Kind of destroys the purpose of the feature.

-We have no way of telling what the 'Animated' mark may be signalling.

And plenty of other problems, but I cannot be bothered to list every single one, as this Thread will likely get culled to save face.

>How do I get the old themes back?
You don't. Those are no longer compatible with the new site and had to be axed. Though we're probably bringing them back one by one as time goes on. Right now they're on the bottom of the list of things that need doing.

No. The beta was open and public for nearly 5 months. We gave ample warning and opportunity to chime in with the feedback.

I rate this: Yikes/10.

Edit: And before I forget, I don't recall any warning about this 'Beta'.
Edit 2: 'Search' no longer keeps previous info, and as such, it is a pain to look up tags for every 'Daily' scan.

A Shameful Display!

I'm gonna be real here Chief, I don't browse the forum and hardly log into my account. I just drop in the popular page which sat nearly up top of the website and maybe search a few tags that peak my curiosity. I had absolutely no knowledge of a new layout being developed otherwise I would've opposed it. This new layout is wack and destroys any muscle memory I had, and many others did prior to this change. Not real happy coming home from work to this

So why exactly am I forced to make an account for you to view certain types of content? I have six billion throwaway accounts to satisfy arbitrary registration requirements on other sites, I'm not exactly excited to have another one. I can see exactly zero justification for this. If it's in the interests of blocking 'objectionable' content, then is that not what your auto-blacklist is for? It's completely redundant to require accounts when you have a perfectly fine feature that fulfills the only possible reasonable reason why you'd want forced accounts, without actually inconveniencing people who don't want to socially engage with this place, period. Is this a prelude to some danbooru-like paid account system?

The point of an account on these kinds of sites is that you want to contribute, by uploading or posting on the forum. However, the vast majority do not want to do that. They're here for easy porn without thumbing through dozens of artist's accounts and scrolling social media mess, this is effectively a booru clone. Forcing an account is just a stick in the craw that won't force them to engage with you, especially if they're like me and actively choose to avoid doing that on a place that has you walking on eggshells. Rather, most people will see you blocking content and move to another site. You are, in effect, emboldening your competitors by increasing the barrier of entry for the average user, which is a poor move any way you put it.

Yup, the whole easy and cheap vibe is killed. I completely agree

I realize it's already been mentioned, but it would be really nice to have the resize button brought back.

What's the point of being able to toggle the blacklist while searching if you just have to toggle it off AGAIN when you actually go ahead and intentionally click on something that was blacklisted?

Also, no, there was not any notice. Maybe for people who use the forums but the forums are nowhere near the primary function of the site. You've failed to explain why this was necessary and failed to provide any indication to the main part of the site that it would be changing so dramatically, and then completely failed to actually release a completed update.

Thanks.

Is it too late to give feedback on the new layout?

It's absolutely not too late, we will be improving on the layout as soon as the rest of the underlying bugs have been squashed, as such, please keep the feedback coming it definitely helps us.

It's current year. Old developers wrote the old code, they are gone now

A clear sign of a lazy developer is one who rewrites everything their own way, instead of fixing the problems with the existing code.

Blame the users for not doing enough beta testing though.

I think my biggest issues is the following:
Why is the "view original" warning below the image now instead on top like before? It's better on the top, but that's just a personal opinion.

Secondly, PLEASE bring back the + and - icons when viewing thumbnails, it was convenient to not have to constantly type in your tags whenever you started a new tab of searching, I have no idea why they removed that, it only has the ? icon now and that's no good.

Oh boy is this redesign a mess of epic proportions. Used this site for 6+ years and i'm just now making an account to comment on this.

1. I can guarantee you that 90% or more of the user base did not even know there was a move/redesign/new codebase being worked on.. Even if you "stickied it" somewhere.

2. The "improvement and polishment of the layout" should be done pre-release. Not after. Furthermore, a beta running for less than half a year with apparently no one knowing about it is not adequate.

3. Stated excuse for doing this is, and I quote: "old stuff had a few vulnerabilities and ran fairly badly".. Which begs the question: Why rush this out the door years before it's ready and having a plethora of critical bugs be present? You've pissed off the entire userbase and on a purely technical standpoint, it's apparently also riddled with these security concerns you were trying to get away from in the first place.

twobrains said:

Bruh. Cub isn't pedophilia.

I have seen four major redesigns of sites i use daily recently and they were all worse than the original. I can appreciate a backend change as much as anyone but why add a whole new UI? We all liked how the old one looked.

Before, I was capable of viewing all of the stuff without needing an account. Now I try to find what I'm looking for and get the "register to view 28 images from X artist". Really?

Please bring back the splash page, I don't want to be blasted with a couple dozen images I didn't want to see when I open the site.

Also please bring back the ability to 'save' a search so I only have to type in the few letters that started it instead of retyping the entire dang search every time I want to find something.

Otherwise I'm ambivalent about the changes(though leaning toward the 'why is it so different' side personally), but I would really like those two things brought back.

Why? Why are you doing this? It was, of course, not perfect, but very good (gif, webm display, for example, the main page was pleasing to the eye), and now there is a continuous hash ... It's sad. Very uncomfortable. I enjoyed using the site almost daily, but now ... now this is completely different. The deterioration rather than an upgrade.

You can't make such a drastic, uncalled, unwanted, unneeded change to the website that objectively made it worse, then write these pissant, passive-aggressive FAQ responses and just expect everything to be perfectly fine. It doesn't work like that.

I've been using this website on a near daily basis for the last five months. In fact, I've been using it regularly for the past five years and counting. I kept coming back to this website for its sleek look, its easy-to-use interface, and the fact that finding pictures of what I wanted was easy. I even often wished every website had a design like the one you guys had. I loved it so much I decided to start uploading pictures and editing tags and creating pools for pictures. Just trying to make this website even better in my own small way.

Want to know when I found out you guys were looking for feedback? About 30 fucking minutes ago, when I went "What the fuck happened? Why does e621 look like this now?"

Usually, when you want to advertise something, you put it where people will, you know, see it. The best place to advertise something big and site-changing that I can think of would've been the home page (which doesn't exist anymore, how fun!). It wouldn't have taken you too long! Just a few small lines of code on the page to write, in nice big letters "We're thinking of changing this website's look! Check out the beta here, and give us your feedback here!" That way, you might have actually gotten feedback from a lot of people, and found out that a lot of people hate it. Literally none of my roleplaying friends like the new look. None. Not a one.

No, instead, you guys decide to put the fact you want feedback somewhere that 95% of your user base don't even look at, let alone read, and then turn around and blame us for not giving you any feedback.

Oh cool, I didn't know this website was owned by Bethesda.

Why is this a thing? Why do companies and websites rush out half-finished, poorly working products out on their user base with plans to fix it later down the line? Why not just take the time to make sure it all runs smoothly and looks nice before forcing it down everyone's throats? Or better yet, how about NOT forcing it down everyone's throats? Why axe the old themes? Why give this version of the website with no option to go back to a previous version?

You realize your website was literally unusable on mobile until I turned off mobile mode, right? Everything was a cluttered mess with comments overlapping on the picture. And even on my desktop, everything is blocky and weird, and the design is literally a step back from how it looked less than 24 hours ago.

That's not even mentioning all the downgrades. No more cache for the search bar means that I now have to type out every single tag by hand no matter how many times I searched for it. No home page with the fun mascots means you just get all this porn jarringly thrown in your face, and the fact you see the most recent uploads means you might instantly see tags you hate. Honestly I could go on with the downgrades but I'd just be repeating what everyone already wrote down before me.

TL;DR IF IT AIN'T BROKEN, DON'T FIX IT.

Agreed!

Addition: why intentionally hard-cap faves???? I see no reason to do this unless you're planning a premium account mode

We realize this layout sucks major ass and will work on improving it.
We're also not going to revert this change because you had time to tell us to improve it.

So this is just janitor speak for "I don't care what you think because I wanted to reuse code from other websites".

The beta was open and public for nearly 5 months.

Yes, I believe the beta signup was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard."

I have a problem. When i'm trying to add a post to my favorites, an error pops up (Error: An unexpected error occurred.)
Someone faced a similar problem?

Yes, they instituted an 80k maximum favorites limit for some bizarre reason. I have the same error and am sat at 160k but they don't actually tell you why you can't favorite anything else. I actually assumed the site was still experiencing some technical issues and have about 10 tabs of things I want to favorite that I now can't.

Here's the proof. https://e621.net/forum_topics/25717

Did you fellas attend the EA:s school for releasing stuff before they are done? Goddammit mods, there is a reason people hate this type of shit.
Take your time and do things properly instead of just taking a paniked scat on all of us.

I approve this heavily, take your time with huge things like a new look on the site, don't pull a massive EA

my favorites arent sorted by most recently favorited, they seem to be sorted by most recently the picture was added to the site, is this a bug or a feature, because i want to change it back

Personally, I do not mind the new UI and think that it might be slightly better than the original. However, I definitely willnot be using the mobile mode, and I am VERRY glad that this is not one of the “permenantly mobile” sites with those absolutely terrible and unavoidable mobile sites.

EDIT: Also, THANK YOU for in-post search navigation! I love this feature and I hoped that it would get added since I started using this site. :)

Try reloading the page, we fixed that a few minutes ago.
