Topic: Tutorial for new users?

Posted under e621 Tools and Applications

Hey, one thing that is very common is people not using the blacklist, and complaining when they see something that is not their kink or not knowing how to tag things right, i know there is a place on the site that explains it, but for new users could be hard to find.

It would be possible to have a quick video section on the "My Account" page, or a "Tutorial" section on it to explain the tools and the most crucial rules of the site?

Here's the wiki for quick tips. I'll edit stuff in as I run through the account page .

Settings: In here you will find options for your account, including blacklist, how posts & tags are, your email, profile information, and etc.

Change Password: Here is where you can change your password.

Manage API Access: Don't really know how this works... ask a janitor or up.

Change Username: Here, you can submit a request to change your username. It is a ticket, though, so it may take a couple of hours.

My Profile: This lets you visit your profile, where users can see your information.

My Messages: This is where tickets, Dmail, and records are given to and/or from you.

My Favorites: This is one of a couple links where you can access your favorited posts.

My Sets: If you have made a set , this is where you will see them.

Sets I Maintain: I do not know how maintaining sets works, either. I do not maintain any sets.

Set Maintainer Invites: I do not know how this works as well.

Search For Myself in Comments: This lets you find comments that include your name, IE your comments, people who replied to you, and people who mentioned you.

Search For Myself in Blips: This will let you find blips that mention you or ones you've made.

Search For Myself in Forums: This lets you find forum comments that you made, you've been replied to, or that have mentioned you.

Comments on my Posts: If you ever post images on this site, this will let you specifically view comments on said posts.

I included links in this, anything that is not colored white is a link that should send you to what I referenced. The wiki should have everything else you will need.

I've also taken the liberty of creating a video tutorial using the links that Siral included above (thank you!). I will be uploading it to YouTube as soon as my slow-ass computer/server finishes rendering it.

I've been working intensely on a big guide for new (and old) e621 users a month or two ago. After my resignation however, I've lost the motivation and the guide is also out of reach now...
Maybe one day it'll emerge from the deep again.

I have been thinking before if things most people find disturbing should be automatically blacklisted. Don't remember getting an answer when I asked back then.

I don't agree with this. Namely for the fact that what should and shouldn't be included by default is highly subjective.

Why not_furry tho? Seems unnecesary. Danbooru is already doing this stuff and its incredibly annoying.

Well... maybe by default, for the first 2 days, when you log in it would put you on the "Tutorial" page?

I don't see that happening anytime soon.
We already have the e621:blacklisting suggestions page. Decide for yourself what's disturbing and what isn't.

The mods could choose the top 3 tags that are blacklisted most often. I don't know what those are, but that's pretty objective.

The intent behind a default blacklist is to more strongly encourage its use. This would cut down on common complaints and make the mods' job easier.

I'm against having a default blacklist only because people may literally never know that a blacklist is preventing them from seeing what they may or may not want to see. Even with the little side part saying that X images are being blacklisted, it would not be obvious enough for themselves to recognize and want to intervene.

Instead, I would personally want new users to at least be redirected to the wiki apon making an account, if not have to interact with it to recognize how the site works.

I doubt alot of new users would care about reading rules. I think they would just skip it without reading it and browse pictures.

Then shame on them. You shouldn't hold people's hands just because they'll get offended, it'll make action against them (in general, look at FA's problems...) that much worse. Obviously, this is not "ideal", because it tramples over other's feelings, but they should quickly learn by least trying to point in the right direction (should emphasizing quickly learn, not absolutely learn).

If you give them a default blacklist, it's not gonna stop them from complaining about more things to blacklist. Which then repeats the cycle of "They complain too much, admin gives record, 'I didn't know there was a blacklist!', & rinse and repeat until they learn about it". It is a very temporary solution.

I vehemently disagree. While suggestions might be applicable or appropriate autoblacklisting is just wrong.

I personally love certain gore related tags. Its one thing I find really nice to look at. Some other people find it horrendously repellant.

I can't stand scat. Its disgusting to me. I blacklisted it because I'm an intelligent adult who doesn't need to be told what's right to like or dislike. I don't need my hand held.

Telling people there is a blacklist and how to manage said blacklist is a good thing. Doing it for them without notifying them is even worse than not doing anything at all.

On the page of the image, scroll down along the left side. Under the "Options" category, at the bottom of it, is a link that says "Set as avatar."

How do I make an account picture?

What Furrin said. Only pictures in site database can be used as avatar. Can't upload custom one from account page.
