if you have a Wii U, there is a way to still play Baten Kaitos, although the way to play them are kind of in the grey area of being kind of considered piracy if you don't happen to own the game in the first place.

Nintendo offering Virtual Console channels for their own games isn't piracy. You're still paying for the game.

EWatLO must be a decent sized RPG. the few i'm listening to now sound real...peaceful too though i'm sure not all of it is...oh! here we go, Brave Way sounds more like a theme for a major event. yet it still has a similar feel to the others...

It's huge. It basically set my standards for an epic JRPG. It also needs to be huge, since items age as you play depending on game/real time. Bamboo shoots that heal become sticks you hit the enemy with. Photos (the main way to get money) develop (you have a fantasy equivalent of a Polaroid camera). Sake becomes vinegar. Bananas go from green to ripe to rotten.

looks like 5 of the videos in that playlist were deleted and this one (violent storm) must be a battle theme. pretty good one too, reminds me of star ocean's battle themes somewhat. or perhaps something from one of Gust's Atelier games. think i'll go ahead and download that one. :) violent storm...with a name like that it must be a nice battle when you first hear that theme.

now for origins...Valedictory Elegy, hello star ocean though this is less electronic sounding. this one has some big similarities to a few star ocean battle themes. but unlike those it's got very little, if any, electronic instruments to it. gives it a bit of a different feel this way.

Believe it or not, that's the music for an ordinary battle. The one for EWatLO is The True Mirror, which is on the soundtrack for both. I won't spoil anything, but it's the theme of a character you never see, but know the most, and while that character is your enemy, in 20 years they will be on your side.

awww... gamecube games? i can't play them even if i wanted to then. no gamecube and my wii is long gone since it broke and started suffering severe overheating issues. well, at least theres the good music and i can always watch let's plays of them.

There's a lot to miss in both. In Origins, Savyna's reason for showing up in EWatLO can be accidentally skipped by having her be somewhere else (I can't say why). There's also the matter of who the infant is at the end of Origins. Fans have argued whether it's Kalas due to one wing, or Melodia due to Sagi and Milliarde not being present in EWatLO and being close friends with Geldoblame.

One thing you'll like about EWatLO, the cliche of age in JRPG being stuck with 20-somethings or teenagers who are unphased by being soldiers is gone. The 36-year-old is physically the strongest (and most of that comes from being a fisherman/bouncer), and the 14-year-old is physically weak enough that their magic is the only reason they can fight at all (though living in a place where the air is dangerous without a mask filter is part of that). Lyude shows what being a child soldier does to people, as do Skeed and Valee (and all three treat it differently, with one being too scared to act against things he knows is wrong, Valee seeing it as consequence-free leverage against people stupid enough not to fight back, and Skeed just controlling Lyude because it's a moment where he gets to be in control of something). Not much to say about Xelha. Not much I'm allowed to say about Kalas.

Also, I won't say why, but there is a reason you have the option to be a boy or girl in EWatLO but not Origins.

I'm talking about the Wii homebrew called Nintendont, the Wii U doesn't have gamecube Virtual console. If you were to play gamecube games on your Wii U I feel like the Smash 4 Gamecube adapter or a Mayflash Gamecube adapter would be best since Nintendont works with non Wii controllers. I mention piracy because Nintendont loads dumped Gamecube games perfectly, or at least almost perfectly.

bayen kaitos info

so not only are those some really long games but they also make use of the consoles system clock in a way you rarely ever seen in a RPG. that sounds VERY impressive for the time they came out.

i've seen aspects of that time system in other games, sure, but not to such an extent. sure, theres plenty of games like Tales where you have certain items that will regrow in real time (herbs). in others such as skyrim it would be tied to respawning enemies and harvest points around the world (same as with tales basically). not sure if i've seen any that have items which grow into weapons though (you find a living weapon that grows like that...man, let that thing become ancient. it'd probably grow into something legendary.). i think i've seen some where the characters age like this...maybe? might not have been tied to the system clock though.

but i've never played any where the entire games time, growth, aging, etc. is ALL tied to the system clock. it's usually just 1-3 aspects of the game, not the whole in-game world.

i wonder if that affects the final boss of those games in some way such as making them easier or harder.

and while i'm here, i think i'll just go ahead and make that list i spoke of in my last post. 20 areas with 20 treasures...wonder how many are references to other bamco games and the main Tales world as a whole.

expedition areas & treasures

Leymon Sea - Red Jeweled Pendant
Diomell Islands - Twins' Clothes (the clothes 2 master mimics wore)
Exsphere Sea - Yggdrasill Goddess Statue
Astas Sea - Fantastic Landscape (a painting of a tower of rebirth and a castle in the sky)
Kanonno Island - Portrait of the Three Guardians (they look like cats)
Normin Islands - Empyrean Tablet (has 5 symbols on it)
Soma Volcano - Spiria Core Crystal
Barbatos Archipelago - Bone Mask (looks like a helmet made of bone)
Force Islands - Antique Tarot Cards (with the edges honed to sharpness like a blade)
Amarcian Subcontinent - Valkines Cryas Trinket
Crystaliron Sea - Oresoren Brothers (3 dolls of the oresoren brothers)
Centurion Isles - Crimson Crystal
Teepo Island (also known as "Pinkist Isle") - Snow Globe of Growth (has a flower inside that grows as the owner grows)
Kresnik Island (is ruled by cats) - Glowing Gear (a glowing set of gears that somehow move of their own accord)
Krityan Archipelago (tales of vesperia? it mentions a "Vesperian Star" in the description) - Bodhi Blastia Bracelet
Cheagle Island (think i've heard the word cheagle before but i don't remember what they are) - Replica Key of Lorelei
Isles of Noct and Dia (time flows at different speed in different areas) - Moon and Star Earrings
Albane (civilization with the power to transcend time and space) - Cleric's Staff (it's pretty much just that. nothing much to say of this one.)
Swordian Peninsula - Eye of Atomoni Statue (says a large scale version was in a floating city)
and lastly we have Quickie Peninsula - Model Craymel Cage (craymel? first i've heard of this object or whatever it is. looks like a small glass or crystal container with a shard of something reddish orange held inside.)

i wonder how many references there are amongst these. i'd provide pics but i don't feel like scouring google right now, sorry. that tablet has me curious as to what the story behind it is though. i mean, that kind of thing is a pretty interesting find. especially when it's from an ancient civilization.

oh and if anyone wants to see this games intro, check the edit i made before typing this list in the music thread. they did a VERY good job with the animation and it looks awesome. good music too that lines up perfectly with the animation. but...minor spoilers i suppose as it does contain scenes from later in the game. then again, that's not uncommon for games.

Also if you live in Europe, there's actually no other way to play Origins. There is no PAL version and the game is region-locked. That also means you'd need a separate Gamecube specifically to play that one game, which is also against the terms. In other words, because of Nintendo's terms, there is no possible way for anyone in Europe to legally play Baten Kaitos Origins.

that is pure BS and i just hit some MAJOR trouble. Dire Enemy!

Sacred Babboon: 17,417 hp and as a dire enemy it makes all other monsters in the fight invincible until this mighty beast falls! now THIS is a dangerous monster.

edit: O_O holy... get a load of this babboons artes & skills.

Artes:

Rush (stun 20%)
Backflip
Right Chop (25% paralysis)
Impact (Defense down 40% - Defense up, it debuffs the target while buffing him)
Burning Break (Stun 90%)
Deadly Scratch (slow 30%)
Blood Moon (burn 8%)
Dash Uppercut (Defense Down 35%)

i think the %'s are the chance of inflicting those effects.

Skills:

+30% attack when hp is 32% or lower

this. is. BAD!

edit2: yeah...there was no way i was gonna win that fight currently.

there is the Freeloader exclusively for PAL regions that essentially makes your Gamecube region free, although due to how saving Gamecube games and Gamecube memory cards work, you're better off just hardmodding your Gamecube in such a way that it is region free with a modchip called XenoGC, or importing an American Gamecube if you don't want to risk breaking your gamecube.

I always read the terms even back then. Just playing the console while not currently located in the region it was locked to is considered a violation. Technically, if I moved to Europe and brought either the game or the console with me just for my own personal use, it would be a violation of a legal agreement, even though it's my stuff and nobody else is using it.

I always felt the japanese version was just the same as the american version back then only with the difference that the japanese version was in Japanese with no option to change to english. I only discovered this wasn't true when I started hearing things like how Australia and Germany had their games censored for violence, like German Half Life 1 being robots and scientists becoming depressed as the dying animations. the only game I own that isn't my region's funnily enough is Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, a Japan exclusive PS3 remake made as the PSP version of the third generation of the Monster Hunter series.

think i'm almost to the...current main villain of Berseria. i say current because this guy doesn't strike me as final boss material. seriously dark and twisted, yes, but not final boss dark.

this games world is twisted...not to give spoilers but basically this dude has exploited the masses from the start by bringing forth demons into the world then later, using the same ritual, bringing forth the means to defeat those demons. now he sits at the head of a theocratic empire with people worshiping him as a savior.

i've known for a while now that when the truth comes out about what hes done...things are going to come crashing down and the whole world will suffer for it.

or maybe video game logic will take over and magically no one will notice much. it would REALLY suck if they did something like that though as it'd take away a LOT from the drama to come.

walls around a capital city with everyone inside told that said walls are to keep the demons out while those protecting them let demons roam the sewers without the townsfolk knowing? lol that's a sinister plan they're waiting to start. i can easily imagine some terrifying ways that setup could play out and several would lead to mr. villain getting more praise as a hero & savior of the people.

a darkness cloaked in light. that's what this villain is.

oh and, kamimatsu? i am STILL unlocking things! i finished the expedition stuff early this morning before going to bed but this damned shop thing keeps going. lvl 10 now and it keeps giving potentites (those items that unlock features/abilities) and increasingly rare equipment items. i don't know how long this game really is but the shops currently sell rarity 6 while hitting lvl 10 gave me a rarity 17 item. and that 17 item STILL doesn't use the highest crafting materials so even that keeps going higher too!

i'm beginning to wonder when this stuff ends. NG+ perhaps? oh and i even unlocked a new difficulty lvl too earlier. easy/normal/medium/hard and now intense.

if it's in this game i haven't seen it thus far so no synthesis yet.

edit: i'll sit around and exploit the f out of that ex[edition system later to try and finish the shop lvls. you need a lot of high value (i'm talking 30k+) items to throw away to raise that shop lvl beyond 10 without wasting a lot of time grinding and buying/selling junk.

edit2: er...nevermind the expedition thing. >.> that lvl 10 was slow when selling items at 30k+. 11 will be even more so.

AND...taking a peek to see how much i have left to see and unlock... O_O i'm not even halfway through this game. just started part 3 of 6 just now accordinbg to that guide.

yet MORE DLC related BS!

what?! why you greedy... all of the stat and gold/exp boosting DLC is New Game + stuff! you buy it in the NG+ Grade shop.

+1k HP, double grade, double gold, and double or even triple exp payout... granted theres not many of the listed features offered as DLC but even so... to think that people can just throw irl money at the game to get what you otherwise would have to beat the game to EARN. just more reason for me to dislike DLC BS.

moving on... wait...what? this dude lists all the item names but no descriptions or what they unlock or do, no stats for equipment... @guide author: dude...wtf? why even include those sections in your guide if your not going to add any relevant information? item names alone tell us nothing about them.

News Wave Extra! - GameStop Sells Meth To An 11 Year Old!?

Again in fact. Oh deer. Check the manuals/case GameStop.

5:00 let me stop you right there, buddy. i call bullshit on that claim and have seen multiple dumpster dive videos to back up my accusations. it is a known fact that you gamestop employees take a knife or something and scratch discs as well as cutting the cords on controllers and other stuff to damage consoles then throw all that stuff in your dumpsters out back.

how likely is it that those games in question might be laying in a dumpster after a gamestop empoloyee to a knife or something and scratched them.

balance inventory...please...

edit: well, that's interesting. i'm watching the openings of the different Tales games right now and i was right about the treasures being references. costumes in berseria as well.

that skull helmet belonged to a Destiny 2 character. and one of the costume dolls is a main character from the 1st Symphonia game.

Yes, I know, this is Russia, not USA, but they have their own constitution which grants a freedom of religion. This law was created in 1997.

from the TASS article: "The video stirred up a controversy among believers while a criminal case was initiated in accordance with the Russian Criminal Code’s articles citing incitement to hatred and enmity, denigrating human dignity, as well as violating the right to freedom of conscience and religion."

o_O what does "denigrating human dignity" mean? and i'm pretty sure playing a video game isn't violating anyone's freedom so that's more of those dumb claims.

"In January 2017, a new charge was brought against Sokolovsky under an article citing illicit trafficking in technical equipment, with the intent of covertly collecting information, since a pen containing a small camera had been found during a search of his apartment."

ok, this just sounds like they were looking for something to punish him for. not actual evidence of a crime. unless owning a pen camera is illegal in russia,

also, exactly how is playing a video game "inciting hatred"? that sounds like a BS claim that could've been pulled up on the spot to worsen the resulting punishment, not an actual crime.

the whole situation sounds pretty stupid imo.

edit: huh, something interesting appeared in my "up next" side bar.

The game world doesn't age. Just the items. Some get weaker. The prequel, Origins, has a sidequest using the clock where Pac Man catalogues items by moving randomly in the inventory one space every few minutes, blocked by quest items, and eats what he runs into. The cards basically contain the essence of things, so the deck of cards being an inventory is not an abstract representation. It's literally a deck of cards used as storage.

Though there is one character who ages, though the age is just fluff. Their birthday and when it happens is a bit of a spoiler though, so I won't say who.

like German Half Life 1 being robots and scientists becoming depressed as the dying animations.

what? i mean, i know europe has always been pretty big on the "no humans in video games" thing (i first learned of that with the contra games aka Probotector, the european version) and knew that was some form of censorship (i don't remember if i ever found out the exact details behind that form of censorship. i think they still do that to this day actually, though it partly depends on the game...maybe.). but that thing with the death animations sounds really strange.

and still chugging along in ToB here... and STILL unlocking potentite and pieces of the tutorial as well. really now, over halfway through the game and STILL unlocking more stuff...when will it end?

though i guess it's better than one lengthy tutorial or something and as it's simply text pop-up you can just skip it if you want.

edit: 123... lol just how big is the inventory in berseria? i mean, non-consumables don't stack at all and i just counted a total of 123 accessories (been fighting in a combat arena area for grade to train and master equipment skills which also leads to mountains of items piling up.) currently.

if, somehow, you can have 99 of each variation (skill combination) of each equipment piece... well, let's just say that there is over 20 possible skills and you sometimes get 2 skills (at this point in the game at least) on one item so... that is a fuck ton of items.

i don't know the inventory capacity on each category but it's clearly very high. cause so far, i only have a small fraction of these equipment items locked so i don't accidentally sell or dismantle them and it's already a good sized pile.

1 of each characters weapons, 1 of each characters accessories, 3 of each armor piece (3 female characters, 3 male so 3 of each), 6 of each ring, 6 of each boot then 3 of each gender locked footwear.

all of those together make up a fraction of what i'm now carrying and i rarely ever sell them. instead, i enhance/dismantle them for crafting materials.

How long until someone adds an E to the title?

or "er" if the words are moved around. >.>

oh and i'm past the point where i can speak of berseria's plot without major spoilers now but i can say this much. if you play it to the end...expect things to get majorly fucked up towards the end. i'm talking emotional mind break shit. this kind of stuff is hard to watch anyone go through... it's one of those times when i can say your better off not developing feelings for the protagonist as it'll hurt in the end.

and also...Magilou... pay close attention to what she says and how she talks throughout the game for she tells a lot more than it may seem at first and knows a great deal of about what's really going on. even though she makes me want to call her something less civil than "witch" at times. >.>

oh and yep, you bet i'm still finding potentites to unlock stuff. lol i think the last one is in the post-game dungeon and it does something awesome! it..it...it lets you upgrade your equipment from a mere +9 to the almighty +10!

...yeah...that's all. lol isn't that the Infinity+1 trope? the one where you go through a huge amount of trouble only to find something that is, by that point, worthless? always fun but at least it's not one of those stupid 100-floor dungeons, lazy devs like to put in RPGs as extra content. those are never fun and NEVER worth the trouble except maybe in a MMORPG but i know not of any MMOs featuring such dungeons.

edit: oo...that was good...

symphonia? and 2nd edit just now for something frightening.

glad i didn't have to fight that dragon to the death. that things roar alone could shatter my defense and stun lock (granted it'd just hit once and hold you there but still...not good).

edit: well, survived the hellkite only for the true villain to unleash his power.

Innominat The Suppressor. the nameless empyrean (a god in that world). basically, he has suppressed everyones sins and negative emotions and desires...so the population of the world is in a zombie-like trance state.

overall, the whole situation just feels...wrong and completely unnatural. is this what it's like when a religion finally reaches its logical conclusion? throwing away everything, even your own life for what you believe to be the "greater good"?

well, they certainly did use a sick theme for this games villains. all this to gain the power of a god and lead the whole world into religious subjugation.

disturbing, nauseating, revolting...would be just a few nice words to describe this situation if your immune to the suppression effects. nothing good could ever come of this.

edit2:

yet more Tales stuff

oh looky, a red orb... (around an hour later on the 3rd floor and with a holy bottle active at that!) hmmm this goes in this slot to open the portal and... Lawless Vessel...? geez, is this thing guarding a characters ultimate weapon or something? can barely scratch it and that's with rokurou who's my heaviest hitter. stats...

58.8k hp, 1,555 physical defense... -_- seriously? tanky as F.

well, the final dungeon is good. nice location, nice appearance, great BGM. *sigh* makes me wish for another opponent like good ol' Nerifes of legendia. now that guy had great music for his fight. out of all Tales games i've tried over the years (granted i've only ever beaten a small few of them) Nerifes was always one of my favorite bosses with his great music.

yeah...you don't get a fight like that very often. :/

to play legendia again or not....hmmm...eh, i'll settle for a let's play since i already beat it once. that and listening to that epic theme song!

well, that aside, there is still one thing that bothers me about this game: when the F do these Fing herbs RESPAWN! the entire game, all the way up to near the end and not a single harvest point has EVER respawned! even if i fiddle with the system clock nothing happens. how am i supposed to buff my characters with herbs if they never respawn?

...i am NOT replaying multiple times JUST for that. oh and endgame...not even lvl 50 yet... which leaves me thinking that they really weren't pushing things to the lvl cap this time. you know, the lvl 200 cap.

come on, final boss fight. gimme another epic battle theme to listen to and a good hard brawl.

edit3:

post-game Tales!

oh boy... well, the final boss was...easier than expect tbh and the BGM wasn't as epic sounding as Nerifes' track but it was still a good fight and ending.

now to grind Grade and check out the post game before i try NG+ for challenges on a higher difficulty!

ghost island, huh? sounds dangerous if it gathers power from all of existence. you don't see things like that too often.

and what's this? a new class 4 zone? bosses you say? what...the... O_O oh YES! Boss Rush Mode has been unlocked! aw YEAH! SWEET!

the loot from that island must be wonderful and the challenge high. ^_^ now THAT will be fun.

ok...this is unexpected but still awesome. not only is the class 4 zone: Elite Quarter a boss rush but it's MULTIPLE of each boss at once! >:)

...w...t...h... that is "ghost island"? i've seen some pointless quests before but come on. that isn't even a reward, it's a joke...literally. screw it, i'm going for the REAL post-game dungeon.

lol see the 2nd section for a real challenge, kamimatsu! it's not just boss rush island, it's multi-boss rush island!

well, that "boss island" was a let down. >.> only about 4-5 rounds of bosses. not the boss rush fight i expected. and since i don't care enough to finish all the sidequests i guess that's it for Berseria.

pretty good game overall, nice length, good story which leaves things somewhat subjective in that...who is the real villain?

velvet for fighting for vengeance...F the consequences.

or artorius who fights for a world of peace, free from suffering and pain.

when you play through it all the way and stop to think about the overall plot it actually leaves that question rather subjective. it just depends on how you look at it. some may see velvet as the villain for her role while others like myself (for his methods) may see artorius as the villain. though i won't say velvet's a hero...shes not as much a villain as artorius imo.

guess it's back to Fate/Extella for me though it's unlikely i'll stick with that one for too long. the monotony of the Dynasty Warriors style of game design gets old reeeal quick. it's not a form of game design i can handle for too long without growing bored.

edit: nooo! it requires a 32-bit OS to run! :( and i don't have a copy of XP setup with dosbox. i have a copy of windows 3x but not XP. would these even work on 3x at all?

the Jazz Jackrabbit games should work perfectly in a Virtual Machine and Wine, so you can run the games on Ubuntu in a Virtual Machine with no trouble.

The first game only needs DOS. So any OS with DosBox should do.

No need to install anything, that was before installation became a thing lol.
Unpack it somewhere, mount the dir, and run jazz.

If say the game is in ~/dos/Jazz/, start dosbox and type
mount c ~/dos/Jazz
c:
jazz

Edit: Jazz2 needs Win9x. So yeah try Wine. Also abandonia.org exists, right?

i type in mount or mount with anything after it and it just says "illegal command: mount". so i can't mount anything.

i haven't even touched dosbox in...i don't know how long.

well, i downloaded a copy of the first game off that abandonia site and it's the same as what i got earlier though in a zip file instead of a ISO.

Uh oh. Some more info? Maybe even screenshots? Try dosbox from their official site?
I'm at loss really, it's been a valid dosbox command for at least a decade.

Just don't do anything that requires horseback riding and you should be fine.

aha! i figured out how to get the 1st jazz jackrabbit game to work.

since i have my copy of dosbox set to run windows 3x, i have a directory in drice C: named Doswin. so i move the files to a subfolder called Jazz in the Doswin directory and..

cd Jazz

JAZZ

game starts right up.

edit: basic platformer but it's not bad. but of course, it was probably considered pretty impressive back when it first came out.

bonus stages look like those from sonic cd and i was starting to wonder where the first boss was until i finished the castle lvls.

the soundtrack is still what i like most about it though.

i wouldn't bash a game for having custom character creation. it could be a decent game. long as it's not too bug ridden. plus, with the art style they use for the characters it looks pretty nice imo.

i'm still waiting for mania mostly though.

oops, guess i can't check my queue right now. gamefly's down for maintenance.

Neither would I. I've actually wanted something like this ever since Dragonball Xenoverse, but this is Sonic we're talking about. As far as mainstream gaming is concerned, there's some very cringy implications. Plus Sonic Team has spouted BS for years as to why the expanded cast is hardly ever touched on, so this kinda just seems like salt in the wound.

My only hope is that the PC release is open to modding so more species, outfits, etc. can be added as well. I'd love to be able to recreate the Freedom Fighters from the comics, but Bunnie Rabbot is the only one you could based on its species selection alone (and I highly doubt prosthetic limbs are going to be part of the character creator)

Has anyone calculated the number of combinations Sonic Forces will allow? Is it as low as 384 or as high as a billion?

a comment by Yet Another Let's Player about the Sonic fandom:

Fans: "We hate this modern Sonic bring back classic Sonic." SEGA makes Generations, Mania and Forces. Fans: "We're sick of Classic Sonic and get rid of modern and Boom Sonic." Fans: "We hate Sonic's friends. Get rid of them and have just Sonic." SEGA does that. Fans: "We want more characters to play as." Fans: "We didn't like Lost World and Boom. Bring back the boost." SEGA makes Forces. Fans: "We're sick of the boost." Fans: "We don't like the Adventure games anymore. Make Sonic Adventure 3." Fans:" We want a new Sonic game." SEGA makes one. Fans: "We hate this." Me: Why do people call this a fanbase? If all these fans do is hate on every game that comes out it just because it's Sonic THEN THEY'RE NOT FANS. Why do they even bother playing the games if the just hate them all?

-_- *sigh* OK...let me fix this copy/paste disaster youtube vomited out...

fixed comment:

is there a script or something to fix the broken youtube copy/paste function...again?

but yeah, given what i've heard of the sonic fandom over the years. that does sound like a fairly accurate description. good thing i'm not like that. much like that one saying about friends: with fans like these, who needs haters?

My only hope is that the PC release is open to modding so more species, outfits, etc. can be added as well. that'd be nice to see, i'm sure. hopefully the sonic fandom wouldn't take the opportunity to start pumping out pure cringe. >.> though that hope probably won't last too long if the game does wind up being modable

oh yes, i still remember that anniversary event sega held a while back. cringiest thing i have EVER seen. cringy enough to make me feel embarassed to be a fan of the franchise. actually, that gives me an idea...

*snip*

Its almost as if fanbases are comprised of thousands of people with varying opinions.

The thing about SEGA/Sonic Team is that they've taken legitimate criticisms, then taken them way too far.

The expanded cast was being pretty heavily mishandled- Heroes and Sonic 06 had a bloated cast (Blaze in 06 being the most heavily botched character before Tails on his period in Lost World), and many of their playstyles felt unrefined and unfitting in a Sonic game (HOPE YOU LIKE FISHING). But rather than scale down the cast and focus on a few at a time instead of the whole ensemble every game, and making them playable in a more fitting fashion, they just threw the baby out with the bathwater and nobody besides Sonic, Tails, and Eggman have been relevant in 11 years.

Seeing Classic Sonic is pretty cool and nostalgic, but he's starting to smell of overuse. Generations was great. He's getting a good spotlight in Mania. But he has absolutely no business showing up in Forces. Instead of having separate spinoffs for classic-styled games like Mania, they've just started shoehorning him into every game, event, and piece of merchandise. Even the comics got both a separate miniseries and a story arc in the main line solely on Classic Sonic, and since they're probably about to be cancelled, that's how the books are going to end.

SA2, Shadow, and Sonic 06's stories were too dark and heavy-handed. Not that the idea of a darker direction for a series like Sonic is bad- just look at Digimon Tamers- but those games were MST3K territory. And not the so-bad-its-good kind of bad like Space Mutiny and Manos (except Shadow, which is just hilarious in how over-the-top and ham-fisted it is). We're talking pure garbage like Castle of Fu Manchu. Sonic Unleashed and Heroes actually had pretty good tone and writing- good direction and sense of scale, fairly light tone with occasional moments of gravity, but not too edgy. Then that all disappeared with Colors, and now every game's story is just "lolbaldymcnosehair."

SEGA's exclusivity contract with Nintendo has only succeeded in putting out several mediocre games for a rather poorly-received platform, and alienated a good chunk of potential Xbox, PS, and PC players. If you didn't own a Wii U, the last game you got was Generations in 2011, and Unleashed in 2008 before that. 2 games in 9 years wears people's patience out.

I really wanted to look forward to Forces, but pretty much every piece of news about it has dampened my enthusiasm more and more. I'll definitely still get it, but I doubt I'll enjoy it as much as I did Unleashed and Generations. It can't be worse than Lost World, at least.

But pretty much every complaint or insult people have about the Sonic fandom applies to literally -any- fandom.

"Sonic 'fans' hate every game that comes out!"

True of any long-running franchise. Eventually a divide appears between new and old fans as the games change. See Halo for a good example.

"There's a ton of porn!"

First, look up the exact wording of Rule 34. Second, Sonic's barely in the top 10 when it comes to porn, with Pokemon having 5 times as much (source http://www.funnyjunk.com/A+message+to+bronies/movies/5319368/250#250 ). Third, NexusMods has a whole section dedicated to Skyrim porn mods.

But yeah, that anniversary event was just... terrible. Hm, now I have a craving for Totinos...

Honestly I think Shadow would have been a good character if he just stayed dead in SA2. Way to turn "Heroic Sacrifice" into "Expendable Clone". We just saw half the moon get permanently destroyed AND confirmed to have been knocked out of its perfect orbit, a tape of a person being executed by firing squad, and am entire island of POWs wiped off the map. I think permanently killing off the new guy is the line-crossing equivalent of forgetting to brush our teeth one night at that point.

eh, fair criticism overall. and i was right when i left a comment saying "Sonic the hedgehog aka Mr. random" on that video. since, the various sonic games do tend to be rather hit-or-miss with how successful they are. and i suppose that fandom divide you mentioned does play into that a good bit too.

think i'd rather random over the same thing with minor variations over time like...pokemon. >.>

random person: have you seen the new pokemon game?

me: ...i beat pokemon over a decade ago.

random person: but this new one has new features and stuff.

me: and it's still the same basic formula that i played a decade ago.

random person: but...but...

me: just stop already.

even mario is that repetitive. huh, i just remembered something interesting about mario's name. did you know that "Mario" is the male form of the name "Mary"?

edit: next up is Toukiden 2 and whatever this Anima: Gate of Memories game is. i'm not expecting all that much difference in toukiden 2 compared to the first game.

edit2: o_O man, gamefaqs PC section is getting weird and disorganized these days.

PC > RPG > General

i was just browsing through and saw normal PC RPG games listed...RPGMaker games listed (should those really be on that site at all? i know theres 2 different games on there titled "Dark Souls" which is stupid. 1 is an RPGMaker game and the other is the real Dark Souls game.)... and i just saw a idle game called Ragnarok Clicker based on the Ragnarok MMORPG too. idle games definitely shouldn't be listed anywhere on that site.

-_- seriously?

it's a freaking asset flip of clicker heroes. they just made an exact copy of the game and replaced the graphics/art. stupid asset flippers.

Quick Question for any peeps who are lucky enough to own a copy of Final Fantasy 15,
How does-

*Major Spoiler Ahead. Dood Seriously this is a pretty big one!*

Ignis go blind? I know it happened in sort of battle or something but everywhere I looked it only gave me extremely vague answers like "it happened in the battle" never anything telling exactly 'HOW' it happened. (There are no videos of this either, Only of the aftermath and peeps saying how said it is. I'm not having a go and saying it's not sad. It's just why aren't there any videos of the actual event of him becoming blind but tons~ of videos of aftermath?!) Did Noctis get knocked out letting the event happen off screen of something else altogether?

well, if you're asking for them, i don't mind sharing them too much.

:/ FFXV had a sad main plot though. especially towards the end. but i did like how they used the theme you would typically here near the start of a FF game when crossing a bridge or something. it didn't make the game any less sad at that point but it was rather fitting given the scene i think.

Honestly, I would be a bit shocked if the game didn't have any dark undertones
seeing it's a final fantasy after all. Pretty sure even the most light-hearted one so far "World of Final Fantasy" has a dark side to it. T w T)

haven't finished it yet but i finally unlocked the 4th, true, storyline not too long ago. good game with good music.

and my next 2 games came in today. this Anima: Gate of memories is... i'm not sure if it was made with unity or what but it's clearly an indie game. the voice acting's not that good and sounds kinda forced but it's not bad. i have absolutely no idea what the tabletop game it's supposed to be based on is like though so i'm really going in blind with that one.

as for Toukiden 2... O_O oh my goodness, they expanded on the design by a lot! the village you start in is a lot bigger and you can move the camera freely. and i think they even did away with the dynasty warrior style of map so instead of a set of rooms it's an open world (well, not like skyrim or anything. i just mean each region is an entire map.).

goodbye to the shopkeeper's dumb patronage system too. overall, even right from the start, this is a BIG improvement in general compared to the 1st game. plus theres this new "demon arm" grappling hook type of system which likely means much bigger oni as well which should be fun.

goodbye dynasty warriors, hello ARPG. :) it's still a lot like the 1st game, just much more expanded and improved on the design. (and that true sight ability no longer drains stamina. not sure but i think the same goes for sprinting too though that may just be for the intro section.)

edit: oh wow, first actual mission is a sort of "rite of passage" trial. a test before you're made an official slayer and right from that point on, you have free exploration throughout the region. goodbye mission area restrictions. ^_^ that is SO much better.

With you guys listing RPGs from an RPGMaker, would anyone have a suggestion for a RPG with a expansive class list / nondescript classes (like FF6's Esperanza system) in a magic setting? Preferably free, I don't know how RPGMaker exactl works but it piqued my interests.

I probably should have been more specific: a Final Fantasy like RPG, party sized and turn based combat. I'm sick of MMOs when playing alone, and if what I understand about RPGMaker *fixed* is correct, there should be games matching that in it. I definitely know there are smut games galore strewn from it on YouTube, but those are obviously bad examples.

I'm trying to remember if One Way Heroics is RPGMaker. There's also Skyborn, though I haven't gotten far enough to say if it's any good.

kamimatsu said:

i think it is. actually, according to this forum thread on steam, it isn't.

and if you want a big game, maybe check out Hero's Realm. i don't remember much about it but it's got a good sized world map.

another good one is Hellion. it features a skill system, good/evil morality system, good music, and an unusual item system. basically, you can go around gathering bags, books, and other stuff which give random items when used. theres even a merchant who sells said containers and if you spend enough time on that merchant (well, money too of course) you could wind up with every item in the game outside of key items. and quite early too. also, be sure to check around for hidden doors and traps when exploring.

Hellion also has this song by Hydain among its soundtrack. actually...iirc that's also the theme of a hidden dungeon in the game where you find the sunglasses item. i could be mistaken but i think that's where you hear it.

edit: ok, i see how the shop system is in toukiden 2 now. instead of a patronage system they changed it to a trade route security setup.

for example, i currently have the Age of Peace region unlocked so the more Oni i kill in that region, the higher the security rating will go which should in turn unlock more items at the shop.

it also goes through multiple tiers as well. just now i killed enough for it to go from "impossible" up to the next tier which is "dangerous". probably gonna have to kill a crap ton of oni to max it but it's still much better than throwing money at the guy. and it didn't even unlock hardly anything of real value in the first game so maybe that too has been improved.

edit2: let's see...

toukiden 2...

Patronage sysytem was replaced by the trade route security system. and as a result was expanded well beyond the simple buy/sell money system of the first game.

the "set-of-rooms" DW map style was ditched in favor of a seamless open world map (no loading screens when your simply out and patrolling like a free-play mode).

the blacksmithing was also expanded. you can now create, enhance, and reforge pretty much any weapon and armor piece.

the adorable lil' tenkyo fox creature was replaced with a little Machina thing and the related resource gathering system was greatly expanded upon. you can now enhance his gathering/combat abilities as well as craft brain circuit parts which alter the AI and what item type his gathering efforts focus on as well as each trip having a set duration instead of returning after a mission.

you can now encounter quest givers and random battles to aid other slayers (bots i assume) in a event battle all out on the field.

the Mitama system was GREATLY expanded. no longer do they lvl up to unlock new abilities. instead, you now gain exp by doing certain actions related to each mitama's different abilities. there might even be more to it than just that too as i saw mention of shards you get by maxing all of a mitama's abilities which can the be used to reforge weapons into very rare, very powerful weapons. like Excalibur for example.

oh and theres now a system where you can sacrifice materials to synthesize new ones.

the village (or maybe villages? dunno yet but you might be able to visit more than the one village in this game) was also improved and is now part of the open world map. so you can move the camera and explore it better.

I forget if your magic was something you could do on your own in it, but there was Final Fantasy Endless Nova. That was a pretty fun RPGMaker game. You would gain no experience from battles, and instead had to lose hp and mp, gain hp and mp, run away, etc to raise your stats.

That system was based on Final Fantasy 2's, where you could equip any given weapon to gain mastery in it, becoming better at landing multiple hits with them, mastery with spells so that the spells themselves level up, and your numerical stats were once again raised by lowering or raising your points. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 2 itself costs money.

well, i found the endless missions of toukiden 2. and they make sense given how the game itself is basically free play mode when you're not bothering with quests and stuff.

basically, you take a mission to explore one of the ruins and fight 1 large oni on each floor. 1 randomly chosen oni.

on this, my first, run i'm now on floor 3 and have faced a Manhunter (first boss of the 1st game. not too much trouble but it has a good number of body parts to take off and decent defense.), a...well, i dunno what the 2nd one was called but it was basically a large snail with a womans body... man, that thing did NOT want to go down easily. she kept regenerating body parts even after i purified them which is good for loot but darn annoying to keep removing them. and now i'm up against what i think is called a Bladetail. large lion-like oni with a blade for a tail (hence the name).

gotta reach floor 5 before i can quit the mission as a success or it'll count as a loss and the mission rewards change (likely stacking for a big pile of loot the further you go) every 5 floors too.

these large oni are no joke. they hit hard and take one hell of a beating to take down. but they're still easier than anything i saw in the monster hunter games. >.> a LOT easier.

eh...i think i've had enough of that Anima indie game. it's nice and all but i'd rather play something else. i will say this though, the dev(s) of that game did a very good job with the boss fights.

taking into account the fact that you can switch between both characters freely, you have one that uses "light" attacks and one who uses "dark" attacks. so not only do the bosses constantly keep you moving around, you also have to keep switching back and forth to get past the enemy defenses.

for how far i played, it's not bad. i've certainly played worse indie games before. just expect to do a lot of back and forth exploration with that title.

edit: darn these maps. i keep digging around for info on this game and it's all japanese only. why is no one translating this shit or posting it on any english sites?

this page for example is useful but i can't read anything. i can only go by the symbols on the maps.

and since the only person to make a chart showing weapon trees did it only for bows i may have to add that to the list of things to fill in if i decide to make a guide of my own later on.

it's great that this game isn't region locked but it's not great that hardly any info on it is in english.

actually...i just looked through those maps again and only 3 are completely filled in.

lol i wonder how many here have ever heard of this game at some point. probably the first though upon seeing the acronym is either League of Legends or "laugh out loud". this here is one of the few text based games to endure from the end of the 90's and still survive to this day.

heck, even most old browser based mmorpgs i used to know are now little more than templates that get traded around over the years. and most of those now rely on a stupid energy/stamina/turn aka "tick" based system where you get a limited supply of one of those resources to do what you want before being forced to either wait for it to refill slowly or pay to refill it on the spot and keep playing. shitty system but i guess it works. i tend to avoid those systems like the plague though. friggin pay-to-win garbage.

but this game, LoL was the first incremental game i remember playing and i thought i'd share the link. it's pretty basic really but it's old so don't go expecting anything fancy. and by that i mean it's a pure plain text game.

Finally got around to getting Yooka-Laylee. Probably one of the cutest games I've ever played.

Have you played DartMUD? It's from 1992 but still running.

Okay.

What about Kingdom of Loathing? It has a stamina system, but it's one of the earlier ones, has no way of buying more (You can eat food or drink booze for more adventures, but there's a limit to that before you get full or drunk, and the entire story is possible to complete in one day if you have the right skills.)

Also that game has an item called "Ring of Telling Skeletons What to Do" and an achievement for getting a back alley sex change operation 30 times.

You also have to unlock the ability to be aware of the fact that you have a torso.

All of this is done in a way that's hilarious.

You can also breath pure air, but you only get the cans of it upon a rebirth as an "oxygenarian," denouncing both food and drink for the run.
