Why People Are Upset About Upcoming Switch Games Requiring SD Cards

edit: So Apparently 'Sea of Thieves' Can Run On A Potato

o_O could someone please explain to me what this guy is talking about when he says "frame rate snob"?

also, 15 FPS... i might be able to tolerate 30 but 15? no, i don't want to play a game where the framerate is so that it looks like things are happening at a snails pace on screen.

if expecting games to run at a smooth 60FPS at this point makes people seem snobbish then i really have to question what world this guy is living in.

did the sega genesis or snes run at 15 FPS? or was that back in the atari days? i honestly don't know. cause i've never played games at such slow speeds that i remember.

correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure 30fps was what nearly everything ran at in ye olden days.

In PAL regions, it was either 25 or 50.

and Street Fighter 2 For The SNES Is Being Re-Released, And It Could Catch Fire...

yeah... reproduction cartridges...that could cause the console to catch fire...

i'll stick to my pc and not risk things catching fire as a result of some reproduction cartridge.

without the franchise being nuked off the internet. probably not something everyone worries about but after those mini consoles it's a valid concern.

Doesn't a large portion of there audience play Bethesda games because modding is so easy to do? On-top of making it (in my opinion) more cumbersome to do because of all the DRM for FUCKING MODS, we now likely have another background app draining resources. I think the only mods that should be paid are the ones that take care of web forums.

I kinda hope Switch as well, since the game could still use the touch screen on a new minimap you can tap on, or press a button for, to access a bigger, editable version of it.

I feel like Elder Scrolls Online helped me realize how terrible modern Bethesda is, I just hope Obsidian can somehow get the rights to Fallout so they can make another actually good Fallout game, Bethesda outright cannot do anything good with any game under their belt.

that and the modding community tends to fix a LOT of glitches/bugs/etc. that bethesda leaves in upon release on top of making the games run better in general. try downloading (iirc it's free to download now) morrowind and run it unmodded on your PC. doesn't matter if your PC is crap like my laptop or decently good, that game will be laggy and use a ton of resources.

morrowind basically requires mods to run properly on PC.

then there's mods for skyrim that do the same (though, while skyrim will run on my laptop it's still simply too resource intensive to get out of single digit lag). mods like that one which transforms the skyrim graphics to...runescape equivalent and those are some ug-ly mud graphics. me, i suspect skyrim would run much better if the draw distance wasn't forced to draw all the games graphics for miles and miles. if some modders could somehow force that down to say....30 feet away or something then the game would likely run vastly better due to less resources going to rendering all those beautiful landscapes all the time.

iirc ESO had more to do with zinimax online studios not being too good with MMORPGs than bethesda but you do have a point. bethesda game tend to be buggy as all heck right out of the box.

since UESP doesn't have an article on Daggerfall, Morrowind has the longest glitch page on the site, which is strange, as Morrowind is my favorite fully 3D TES game. I haven't played much of Arena or Daggerfall to actually know how much I like them or not, though.

ESO really feels like Zenimax trying to make an Always-Online Skyrim and wanted to add MMO elements and everything bad about them into the game, but realized how little it made sense if there was tens of thousands of dragonborns running around and then just decided to make an entirely new game, except it felt super similar to Skyrim, while "character development" was just every character getting tortured, and I only remember the character Sai Sahan because every other sentence seemed to bring him up during the main quest, and all of the quests just revolved around typical MMO style "go collect x amount of this item from some monster for no reason" or "go kill this wave of enemies, with a slightly more powerful enemy at the end." I should also bring up the fact that the Sorcerer class the most busted class in the game, as you can take out most enemies easily from a range, while the enemies were terribly programmed, just to walk towards you and just attack, while sometimes there's an enemy with a bow or staff, so they won't be as close...

i don't remember. was it daggerfall or arena that had the huge-ass randomly generated world every time you started a new game? like, the entire continent was in the game for you to explore and due precisely to that randomization there's no world map to be found for it anywhere on the internet. except for maybe a small handfull of locations that MIGHT have had static locations. great for replayability but that's a LOT of ground to cover in terms of exploration.

i think battlespire was another fairly good game they did. part of that short lived "elder scrolls legends" series. you could talk with and potentially talk enemies into fighting for you though the less intelligent monsters who didn't actually speak beyond grunt and growls... well, best hope you're lucky with them.

here's the free download on bethesda's website if anyone wants to check out any of these old games. looks like only daggerfall, arena, and redguard are free downloads.

man, those games were a whole other world in terms of graphics.

i also don't remember which time period each of those games took place in but i do know they all took place LONG before the events in morrowind...probably.

Huh. The JOY-CONs are totally separate, with color data stored in SPI flash. Does this mean Switch body color can be changed?

I know there's a program that allows you to change the color of the Joy cons through a specific program, I feel like you would need to have access to hacking tools to change the Switch color, though. Is there any mention at all in the code for more than two themes in the Switch code?

I think it was Daggerfall that had all of that randomization. from what I've seen of Redguard's gameplay, it looks really odd and glitchy to play through, though. The timeline goes like: Elder Scrolls Online -(281 year gap)->Adventures: Redguard-(308 year gap, I think)->Adventures: Battlespire-(227 year gap)->Arena-(6 year gap)->Daggerfall-(22 year gap)->Morrowind-(one year passes by)->Morrowind Tribunal Expansion-(one year passes by)->Morrowind Bloodmoon Expansion-(4 year gap)->Oblivion-(768[!] year gap)->Skyrim. Only ESO and Redguard take place in the 2nd era, while most of the games are in the third era, and Skyrim is 200 years into the 4th era, I doubt that Hearthstone: Skyrim Edition takes place in any era as it's just card game, although I haven't played the game yet, so the game can just have an excuse similar to Hearthstone and just take place in some bar located some unknown place in Tamriel.

interesting...and i would still like to see a main series game take place in elsewhere (khajjit homeland). the argonians have the marshlands which iirc are also home to dreugh which make for some tough opponents, but we never get to see or hear much about the khajjit.

well, i already had arena and battlespire (no doom today, maybe tomorrow) and it looks like daggerfall is also 2d. redguard, which i'll download later, is 3d but it's a late 90's game so the graphics shouldn't be too bad. looks like there's some dwemer stuff in redguard too.

speaking of, i think i've only ever seen one dwemer in all my time playing elder scrolls games and that was the fat guy riding in a spider mech on morrowind. rare doesn't begin to describe the dwemer. they sure left behind one doozy of a mess with all that metaphysics related tech they made though.

well, he is but... he's not an "evil" villain. i'd say he's somewhere in between villain and hero.

i'm sure everyone knows how much of a family guy he can be at times. plus he's also helped his enemies (mario and luigi) from time to time when a greater villain appeared (which happens a lot in the RPG games). "enemy of my enemy" and all that.

that and usually his main goal is just capturing princess peach. heck, he'd probably be happy with that over world domination for all we know.

Yeah it was a fun show to bad it ended on a semi cliff hanger
and yes I liked blizzarians too, cute guys.

Yup they did, they had a flash game that was pretty good at the time
just a flying shoot'em up, I think you can play
it still using the wayback machine.

Then they try for the MMO angle that only lasted like one/two years,
the game was in a "Beta" (when it felt like an Alpha)
and didn't have much sounds and music and was abit buggy,
it had this race game only
that plays like a PlayStation Home minigame

Well I remember loong ago I played it
and it felt unfinished
like they wanted to start something
but they ran out of funding or nobody cared for it
or maybe both, because the beta didn't have much features.
Like you post to able to create your own character,

that are base on the cartoon's show main 5 heroes.

But even then,
you only can choose like
3 out of 5 of the characters
because it was a beta.

Their engine is done around OpenGL and Vulkan, so non-microsoft platforms should on paper work better and switch should support Vulkan.

Also that game runs insanely well on PC and current console versions do have quite high quality settings running near 60 FPS, so I can imagine lower settings and adaptive resolution making the game run just fine. Actually, they pretty much have to use lower quality settings, because if they fit whole 67 gigs of assets, most switch owners couldn't even download the damn thing. Even if the graphical change is COD-on-Wii level, the gameplay is all that matters.

Bonus point if they add in motion aiming, still hate aiming with sticks.

I doubt it. Poison ivy is an actual plant name so the enemy would have to look an awful lot like the character before anyone would get sued over it.

Town of Salem is so fun if you get a good role. The Medium, Doctor, Veteran, Mayor, and Jailor curse (you get the role, you die night one) is real, so I usually do all random and get some fun roles.

Jailor is my favorite role. Medium is fun too, I have more wins in that than anything else (SK being second highest), and like haunting mafia members at night if I'm dead. That often throws them off so much that they make a mistake.

Just had a fun game where I chatted with a ghost at night, then they got ressed (sudden retri out of nowhere). So I repeated what I had said during night word to word, the ressed player recognized me as town, nobody else had any idea. That stopped town from lynching me later in the game, and got the real mafia caught.

I had a time when I, some other towny, and the Mafioso were left. I, being a Veteran, had one alert left and I was the last town killing, so "we" voted up to lynch the random towny (which "we" found out afterwards). The random towny was lynched, and they started gloating... so I went on alert and sat there. When the message showed that I was visited and shot my attacker, they must of flipped balls because they promptly rage-quitted. I simply left the house and typed "Veteran FTW" to what remaining ghost players there were.

Like I said, it is really fun when you're not boned by a bad role or the curse.

well, that was annoying but i'm back!

edit: and with ~4GB of that content update left to download i have Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization coming in...re-rented and...i don't think i managed to beat the base game final boss actually so i guess i'll do that before the new content.

stupid stun-locking bastard of a boss. >.> hate it when enemies stun-lock in games. frigging annoying as all heck.

oh and for anyone else who might see this and play disgaea 5:

cheat menu (set all your possible CP to boost your exp) + original shining force games easy exp method (buy a bunch...well, a metric F ton of items in this games case... then start using them in battle over and over and over for eternity) = holy F! HTF AM I SUDDENLY SO OP?!

1 level per 4 unopened sodas from the shop at 100% exp rate = 8 item uses/lvl
160% exp = 5 uses/lvl

also! every 10 lvls a character has gives 1 mana per item used so at lvl 100 you'd be getting 10 mana each time you use a soda. furthermore, you also get sub-class progress while doing this too so swapping the exp for sub-class proficiency would help with that too!

this exploit is AWESOME!

G?! how the f do you get worse than a F when the games rankings go as high as S (or potentially higher still)? that's just plain BAD. i'm gonna have to grind and dump a f ton of mana onto this healer and make her spell power decent.

i mean, sure, she can heal ~half her max hp currently but still...this just shows her potential i think if that's at rank G.

well, that's not a bad idea for an idle game...assuming such a fan game didn't get a C&D order. it certainly does have potential for that sort of thing.

"since grinding yourself retarded is one of the franchise's main selling points."

that said, much like i learned with games made by koei tecmo's omega-force devs. it's best to maintain a touch and go play style with digaea games as it's easy to burn out for precisely that reason.

and speaking of... i think dragon quest heroes 2 definitely fell victim to one of their worse habits (raising the difficulty to ridiculous levels towards the end of a game). :( the main storyline final boss is far harder than anything before it, a major difficulty spike. and then there's the post-game multiplayer maps...from what i read about it in the past and based on my own experience with the main storyline final boss (forgot his name), Dragon Lord would be impossible to beat without a full party of human players. the difficulty of that fight would be stupidly high to where it's not even worth training to lvl 99 for it.

with a game that has customizable characters, I feel it would be easier to just make actor files or something like that in a game like Saint's Row 1 and 2 or some of the older games on 7th gen consoles back when having over 80 GB on consoles was just unheard of. I wonder how video files would take up an extra 5GB after you download, install, and then start up the game...

The save data generally gets created on startup. The save size is stored in the meta.xml for Wii-U.

Nintendo Land
<common_save_size type="hexBinary" length="8">0000000000400000</common_save_size><account_save_size type="hexBinary" length="8">0000000000040000</account_save_size><common_boss_size type="hexBinary" length="8">0000000000000000</common_boss_size><account_boss_size type="hexBinary" length="8">0000000000100000</account_boss_size>

Something similar for Switch. It's in <32 byte hex string>.nacp.xml

<SaveDataOwnerId>0x0100000000002800</SaveDataOwnerId><UserAccountSaveDataSize>0x0000000000000000</UserAccountSaveDataSize><UserAccountSaveDataJournalSize>0x0000000000000000</UserAccountSaveDataJournalSize><DeviceSaveDataSize>0x0000000000000000</DeviceSaveDataSize><DeviceSaveDataJournalSize>0x0000000000000000</DeviceSaveDataJournalSize><BcatSaveDataSize>0x0000000000000000</BcatSaveDataSize>

*starts up disgaea 5* "use of user-generated content is not permitted on your account"

"Due to network restrictions, some functions cannot be used. Change the user netherworld settings."

no, how about you go and get bent, sony? FUCK you and FUCK your dumbass PS+ GARBAGE!

and the above isn't multiplayer related at all. it's the "User Netherworld" feature in this game that let's other people visit your netherworld.

i bet people playing the PC version of this game don't have to pay extra for anything except the DLC. you are not getting 1 penny from me for this shit!

edit: er...oops >.> seems restarting the game fixed it. still doesn't explain why that happened at all though.

It's also ~10€ more expensive like every other Switch game.

Wow, I wonder why I prefer to play my games on PC, but are forced to buy these other devices and subscribtions for them if I want to experience handful of other titles.

Super Mario Odyssey Is Too Small? Wait...What?!

5.7 GB

from the description: "Is a file size really connected to how much content a game has?"

well...sometimes, yeah. it depends on the game in question.

disgaea 5 on ps4 is 6.62GB (no DLC) according to my ps4's storage info. while the 1st dragon quest heroes game is 23.79GB.

i would say disgaea has more content overall. counting all the shops, item world which is basically a randomly generated map that grows in size and complexity as you proceed through the floors, chara world which is pretty much a board game, and the main storyline maps, skits, cutscenes... easily a lot more content than DQH.

DQH had around 15-20 maps that got reused very often...monsters with the usual palette swapping...quest system that typically had you revisiting maps and fighting the same monsters over and over... far bigger file size with much less content plus DQH had full 3d graphics unlike disgaea 5.

so yeah, file size can be an indicator of the amount of content but it also depends on the game in question...and said games graphics. mario odyssey could wind up being surprisingly large for the small file size. just have to wait and see.

now this, Pillars of Eternity, game i was checking out earlier has me curious. it's made by the same people who made fallout: new vegas but is ~15GB n size so i wonder how much of that is audio and graphics and how much is actual content.

edit: Is Square Enix Milking Final Fantasy XV Too Far?

well, square enix does like to milk the final fantasy franchise a lot... how many rereleases and ports has FFVII alone gotten over the years?

and this 7th episode in disgaea 5 is a bit annoying. all the roofs you move around on in this episodes maps are slanted making it hard to see things well. :/

! i forgot to raise the exp payout when i started this episode. darn, i'll have to go do that after this fight.

more exp but less gains on everything else...not the most efficient way of playing but it works and i can shift the focus to things like skill exp or weapon proficiency later (and boos the difficulty up to 20 stars. at 20 stars the lvl 1 prinny's you face while replaying the first map of the game become lvl 45 so it's quite the boost.)

Updated by anonymous

well, i reached episode 8 and unlocked the Martial Training fights and... yep, lvl 99 enemies still give a metric F ton of exp when killed. (difficulty set to 1 star in cheat shop to make the 3 monsters lvl 99)

260% exp in cheat shop

some low lvl statician innocents in 1 or 2 of my equipped items and the GS field for that fight has the +100% exp effect... killia at lvl 582 and can now 1-hit all 3 with his Purgatory Palm skill and STILL gets 3+ lvl/fight.

add to that, this is also great for getting money (240k+ HL destruction bonus per fight) and you can easily sit there and grind all of your sub-classes to 3rd star for the character you're using.

on top of all that, i could raise some recruits and run them through chara world to turn their skills into scrolls and give those to killia and others.

basically, disgaea 5 has all you need to make a cookie cutter army of gods of destruction. lol

See? It's happening. Soon, you will no longer see the faces attached to those ever-growing numbers.

Tell me, have you reached the point where you're getting insane amounts of money per battle but have nothing meaningful to spend it on yet?

lol i passed that point with money when i first got 100k+ saved up days ago. blew it all on 1k+ unopened sodas for this exp and STILL haven't used them all up.

currently sitting in the episode 2-1 map chugging soda like crazy after reincarnating killia for the first time till i can go back to the martial training map. and at this rate his stats will be high enough for that at a fraction of the lvl he was when i reincarnated. lol
that's all disgaea is about: power, power, and more power. well, the power of numbers.

edit: iirc the lvl cap is 9,999. HP/SP cap is 99,999,999 (or was it billions?). stat cap is 99,999,999 on each stat.

not sure what the movement/range/counter/etc. caps are.

yep, this time i can 1-hit the martial training trial 1 group at a mere lvl 83.

this shot will give...7 lvls? odd...maybe it only gives a certain number of lvls at a time if you fight enemies significantly stronger than you. oh well, it's still extremely fast lvling.

$100,000 isn't the "insane money" point. $100,000,000,000 is, and you will eventually be getting so much per battle that the game stops showing you exactly how much. By then, nothing is worth purchasing as you've almost certainly got weapons better than anything the shop can provide, healing items are useless if you have any healers, your characters will have so much MP that they'll never run out and item drops are far superior anyway.

The first game has a bonus level that allows you to get hundreds of levels per go, provided you're strong enough to overcome the enemy's insane DEF stat. I wonder if the fifth game does as well.

actually... this games money goes as high as trillions.

wow, that'd be nice but until i can grind enemies over lvl 300+ these lvl 99's are my best grinding spot. since lvl 99 gives lvl 300+ exp due to an old glitch they keep leaving in the games.

as for the "point of no return" on grinding...i'd say that's when you start reincarnating. the more lvls you stock up from reincarnating, the more bonus stat points you get on each successive reincarnation so with several more loops i could be hitting those lvl 99's at lower and lower lvls.

I know, but you reach the 'all this money and nothing to spend it on' point before that.

Eventually, your stocked levels, weapon proficiency levels and weapon stats get so high that a newly reincarnated L1 character can kill L1000 characters in a single hit and almost never take damage.
